What is Form 8849?

Form 8849 is used to claim a refund for excise taxes. The Form 8849 Schedule 6 can be used to claim a refund or credit of Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes previously paid.

You can file an 8849 if:

  • The vehicle was sold, stolen, destroyed
  • For any vehicle in which the tax was paid and the vehicle did not exceed 5,000 miles on public highways (7,500 or less for agricultural vehicles) between July 1 - June 30.
  • You filed Form 2290 and paid tax in error.
