What exactly can you look forward to at this event? First of all, FREE admission and FREE parking, so why not check it out? Then there are a ton of events to check out, like an antique truck display, the super trucks beauty contest, trucker Olympics, and the Iowa pork chop cookout. Peterbilt Vs Kenworth: Which Side Are You On?

Peterbilt Vs Kenworth: Which Side Are You On?

There are many things that can set people apart based on their preferences, such as if they’re a dog or cat person, if they like Coke or Pepsi, if the best chicken comes from Bojangles or KFC, and more.

Sometimes differences may start off small, like if you like Chevy and for some reason your buddy prefers Ford. Then things could quickly escalate into the Peterbilt vs Kenworth battle, a rivalry like no other!

Peterbilt and Kenworth, like Macks, are classic examples of all American steel and power that have been around for decades. Peterbilt got its start in 1939 with the goal of providing quality logging trucks that could get the job done and Kenworth was founded in 1912 to build rugged, high performing logging trucks as well.

So, no matter what side you’re on appreciate both trucks with their dedication to the trucking industry in American history, we don’t know where the industry would be without them.

The Peterbilt Vs Kenworth Battle

Peterbilt trucks are seen as high quality, classy trucks. They have been referred to as the Harley Davidsons or Cadillacs of the trucking industry. Some drivers simply can’t get enough of that prideful ‘I worked for this Peterbilt and got it’ feeling with all of its pretty chrome and glory.

Kenworths are often viewed as the more rugged truck. It’s a hard workingman’s truck that also offers a high level of comfort, quality, and advancements at a more economical value. They get the job done with high performing parts under the hood.

For the truckers who need all the bells and whistles then Peterbilt is the better options. Everything about the Peterbilt can be customized to suit your needs. You can design the interior feel like your home away from home.

Peterbilt Vs Kenworth: Which Side Are You On?

Peterbilts are often seen as more spacious, more comfortable highway vehicles, but the Kenworth’s AeroCab is extremely comfortable and spacious. Plus, Kenworths are customizable too.

What happens if your Peterbilt is too big though? You need to be able to climb in and out of it easily and reach the clutch. Kenworth is seen as the smaller truck, but it provides more than enough space to comfortably reach the clutch and stretch out.

Are Kenworths the truck of the future? Some people believe so with the innovative technology included in the dash. The Kenworth’s built in navigation systems are better than your smartphone’s. Also, if your truck has a problem you can take it to any dealership in the country to run web-based diagnostic tools from an app to locate the issue and have it quickly repaired.

That doesn’t mean Peterbilt is stuck in the stone ages though. They have advanced safety testing and include a DPA (Driver Performance Assistant) to give you live feedback on how to improve your driving skills. They also have some fuel efficient and hybrid electric engines up their sleeves.

When It Comes To Buying Your Truck

Buying a rig is a huge, expensive commitment. Don’t make your choice based off of the Peterbilt and Kenworth battle. Test out each truck to see which one works best for you and your business. Heck, you could even find out that a Volvo is the best option for you.

Get Your Stamped Schedule 1 Today

What a day to be a trucker! The IRS is now officially processing Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) 2290 returns! That means you can file today and instantly receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email in about 15 minutes.

Why wait to file when ExpressTruckTax makes it extremely easy to file your 2290 return in just a few minutes? The process is simple, check out the e-filing instructions below.

How to File Your 2290 With ExpressTruckTax

Step 1: You begin by creating your free account with expressTruckTax using your email address and personal password. Then in the dashboard, you’ll see the exclusive ExpressTruckTax wallet feature where you can purchase prepaid filing credits at a 10% discount.

Step 2: When you’re ready to file click the orange ‘Start New Return’ button and enter the basic information for your business such as the name, address, and EIN or Employer Identification number. Remember, you need an EIN to file and can apply for one with the IRS online. It will take about two weeks for it to update in the IRS’s system.

Step 3: Then you’ll enter your tax year and your vehicle’s first used month. Form 2290 is filed based on your vehicles first used month and is due the last day of the month after it’s first used month. For example, if you first use your vehicle in April then your Form 2290 is due on May 31st. Then you’ll file annually by the August 31st deadline.

The current tax period runs from July 1st, 2017 until June 30th, 2018, and your schedule 1 for the 2016-2017 season expired on June 30th, 2017.

Step 4: Next you’ll enter information for your vehicle including the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and taxable gross weight. You’ll also select if your vehicle was used for any special purposes such as logging or agricultural uses. Remember suspended vehicles must be filed for as well.

Step 5: Relax as we calculate how much you’ll owe the IRS for you, so you’ll know exactly how much to pay. Then select one of the following payment options to pay the IRS: Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal, EFTPS, Check or Money Order.

Step 6: You’ll be presented with a summary of your information to make sure all of your information was entered correctly. VINs for example, are the number one Form 2290 mistake. Then our system will perform audit check on your form to catch any basic errors.

Step 7: Once any corrections have been made and you’re ready to transmit your form directly to the IRS enter a 5-digit code of your choice at the bottom of the form to electronically sign and transmit it.

Step 8: Do your happy dance because depending on IRS volume in about 10 to 15 minutes you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email. You can also elect to receive a copy via text and postal mail.

Important: But why wait until tomorrow? Today, June 30th, is the last day to pre-file with ExpressTruckTax. It’s also the last day to get 10% off with the PROMOCODE: PREFILE17 for a single truck and PROMOCODE: PREFILE25 for 2-24 trucks.

The sooner you file then the sooner your 2290 return will be processed, approved, or rejected depending on IRS volume. So, we encourage you to file as soon as possible with ExpressTruckTax to beat the rush. We also have a few reminders for you to keep in mind as you prepare to file.

HVUT 2290 Reminders

– If you own a heavy vehicle with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more then you’re required by law to file your HVUT Form 2290 in order to get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1, which serves as your proof of payment. You must file for all taxable highway motor vehicles that are required to be registered in your name under state, District of Columbia, Canadians, or Mexican law.

– For new vehicles, your Form 2290 is due on the last day of the month after your first use month. For example, if you first use your new truck in October then your 2290 would be due on November 31st. Then you will renew it annually by the August 31st deadline. Your schedule 1 for the previous tax period will expire on June 30th.
– In order to complete your 2290 Form you need your business name, and address (your personal details will work if you’re a sole proprietor), and EIN (Employer Identification Number). For your vehicle you’ll need your first use month, VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), taxable gross weight, and be sure to include if your vehicle was used for any special purposes such as logging or agricultural uses.

– Suspended vehicles must be included when you file. A suspended vehicle is one that is expected to be used for 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles). Suspended or credit vehicles also include ones that were destroyed, stolen, or sold.
– You have to file your Form 2290 and you have to pay your HVUT to the IRS. Your payment options include direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal (EFW), EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System) or check or money order.
– You can file over the phone! Just give ExpressTruckTax Plus a call at 803.386.0320 to have a US-based representative file your 2290 for you, over the phone. That’s right, you can handle your 2290 with one phone call. As a result, you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email in about 15 minutes.

Save Money On Your Form 2290

You know what’s a good practice in the trucking industry? Penny-pinching! Saving anywhere you can really help out in the long run, and can actually make or break fleets trying to emerge into the market. Unfortunately, with the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 deadline you’ll have to pay the amount you owe or face hefty penalties. But don’t worry, we know a few ways to save on your HVUT.

Use These Tips To Save On Your 2290:

1. Take Advantage of Our Wallet Feature

Before filing your HVUT Form 2290 see how many forms you actually need to file because with ExpressTruckTax you can purchase prepaid credits through their exclusive wallet feature. Each credit provides a 10% discount off of your filing fee, so the more credits you buy, the more you save. Don’t worry about purchasing more credits than you need, because they never expire and can be used next season.

The credits save you time and money because instead of having to hunt down your wallet and enter in all of your card information, you can conveniently use your prepaid credit to pay for your form.

To purchase prepaid credits log into your free ExpressTruckTax account and you’ll see your wallet in the top right corner. Click the orange ‘Buy’ button to purchase the number of credits you need.

2. Get A Refund Or Credit With Form 8849

After you file Form 2290 and pay the amount of HVUT that you owe you can file Form 8849, the Refund or Claim of Excise taxes form, which is used to claim refunds or credits on suspended vehicles and vehicles that were sold, stolen, or destroyed.

Suspended or credit vehicles are vehicles that don’t exceed 5,000 miles (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles) during the current tax period.

While filing your Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax if your credit vehicles exceed the amount of HVUT you owe then Form 8849 will automatically be generated for you, and all you need to file is your name, address, and EIN. You’ll also need the information for your vehicle that you’re claiming a refund on, including details as to why, if your vehicle was lost, stolen, or destroyed, and the date that the incident occurred.

3. Avoid Penalties By Filing on Time

If you file late you could face a penalty of 4.5% of the tax due. To make matters worse that amount collects on a monthly basis for up to 5 months! Also, if you don’t pay the amount you owe then you’ll face another penalty of 0.5% of the amount owed per month. You’ll really save by filing on on time.

If you wait until just days before the deadline you could run into a problem that causes your form to be rejected and then counted as late if you can’t fix it by the deadline. For example, if you enter the wrong VIN or Vehicle Identification Number, or wait too late to apply for an EIN or Employer Identification Number your form could get rejected.

Luckily ExpressTruckTax makes it easy to fix any mistakes. If your form is rejected you’ll be notified almost immediately with notes as to why. Then you can easily make Form 2290 amendments, retransmit your forms to the IRS, and make free VIN corrections at any time. The sooner your pre-file, the sooner you’ll learn if your form has been rejected or accepted.

How To Pre-file?

You can create your free ExpressTruckTax account to access our step-by-step 2290 e-filing guide to complete your form in a matter of minutes today. Then as soon as the IRS stamps your Schedule 1 you’ll receive a copy via email. You don’t even need a computer to file, download the free ExpressTruckTax App to file on your smartphone or tablet from any location.

Also, you can call ExpressTruckTax Plus at 803.386.0320 to speak with a representative who will pre-file your 2290 for you, over the phone. How does it get any easier than that? Plus, you’ll get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.

OOIDA’s ELD Appeal Was Rejected

No matter which side of the ELD (Electronic Logging Device) mandate you currently stand on, you should brace yourself to comply with the compliance mandate on December 18th, 2017. OOIDA’s appeal has been rejected so it might be time to prepare your truck and fleet to comply.

OOIDA Isn’t Left With Many Options

OOIDA or the Owner-Operators Independent Drivers Association has been trying to fight the DOT to put a stop to the ELD mandate for years now on the grounds that they violate the rights of drivers and their constitutional protection against unreasonable searches and seizures because the rule fails to meet the congresses stipulation for the mandate.

However, the supreme court has refused to hear OOIDAs lawsuit appeal against the DOT rule that will require truckers to use ELDs to track hours of service. Therefore the December 18th, 2017 compliance deadline will remain intact for now.

Although, this doesn’t mean that OOIDA is giving up their fight. They will continue pushing the matter to Congress and the Trump Administration because they highly favor the 4th amendment which protects citizens against unreasonable searches and seizures.

A Little About The ELD Mandate…

To put it simply, an ELD is an electronic logging device that connects directly to a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) to record the driver’s hours of service. This will make it more difficult to bend the rules and go over the driving limit of 11 hours per day since paper logs and electronic driver logs can easily be faked.

The data that an ELD captures is from the engine including movement, the number of miles driven, location, and hours.

The potential benefits of ELDs for fleets include saving time and saving money as they reduce the amount of paperwork that will need to be processed by eliminating paper logs. However, the benefits for the entire trucking community include saving lives.

FMCSA the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration estimates that 26 lives will be saved and over 1,800 vehicle crashes will be prevented annually because ELDs will reduce driver fatigue by more heavily enforcing compliance to hours of service regulations.

However, many drivers have concerns about ELDs and do not want them. For example, will drivers and owners of smaller fleets be able to incur the costs of installing these devices in their vehicles?

Plus, they’ll be mounted on the dashboard, taking up valuable space and visibility. Will ELDs actually be dangerous by blocking a part of the driver’s view of the road? Also, will it be distracting?

One major concern is that ELDs will violate the driver’s privacy by recording their personal data. The guidelines as to what will protect the driver’s confidentiality when it comes to determining compliance with hours of service aren’t set in stone yet and that’s worrisome to a majority of drivers.

Are You Ready For The Mandate?

Whether you’re on board for ELDs or totally against them OOIDA has a tough fight ahead of them now. Even though they’ll continue fighting for the rights of truckers, the compliance deadline of December 18th will remain intact. Don’t let this deadline sneak up on you, be prepared to comply with the mandate.

For more trucking blogs visit ExpressTruckTax.com and please share your thoughts on the ELD mandate in the comment section below.

2290s And EINs: Everything You Need To Know

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax season is coming right at us at full speed! You can try to jump out of the way, but you’ll still need to file your Form 2290 by the August 31st deadline. Don’t let the deadline run you over. Be prepared and file as soon as possible to avoid having your form rejected. For example, it’s very important to know that you’re required to have an EIN.

What to Remember About Your EIN?

Your EIN or your Employer Identification Number is also known as the Federal Tax Identification Number and the Federal Employer Identification Number or FEIN. EINs are assigned to businesses operating in the United States in order to identify them for tax reporting purposes. Each EIN consists of a unique 9 digit number.

This is important because you are required by the IRS to have an EIN to complete your 2290. They need it to identify you to correctly verify that you’re filing for yourself and to prevent fraud.

There may be some confusion when it comes to EINs and Social Security Numbers (SSN) because they’re both 9 digit identification codes. However, EINs are used to identify businesses, and social security numbers are used to identify individuals. Also, the IRS used to accept SSNs in place of EINs on Form 2290s, but that is no longer the case. If you use your SSN in the EIN field your form will be rejected.

Also, when it comes to the information on your 2290 such as your business name and address, it will need to match what the IRS has on file or it could be rejected. You can see if your information matches what the IRS has on file by contacting the IRS directly at (800) 829-4933.

If you don’t have an EIN you can apply for online for free with the IRS here. Once you finish applying you will instantly receive your 9 digit EIN, but please keep in mind that it will take about 15 days for your EIN to update in the IRS’s system and your 2290 could be rejected during this time.

Each EIN is is a unique code that never expires. However, as a sole proprietor you may need a new EIN if you’re subject to a bankruptcy proceeding, you incorporate, you take in new partners and operate as a partnership, or you purchase or inherit an existing business.

How To File Your 2290?

Why wait when you can go ahead and knock out your 2290 today? Go ahead and file online with ExpressTruckTax or the ExpressTruckTax App now. Simply follow the step-by-step filing guide to instantly complete your form. As a result, your Form 2290 will be transmitted directly to the IRS and you’ll get your stamped Schedule 1 in about 15 minutes.

Last Minute Father’s Day Gifts For Truckers

Father’s day is almost here so we hope you have the day off to spend at home with your kids, or that the trucking dad in your life will be there. Heck, some of you might be from a generation of truckers, who learned everything you know about driving for your pops. If you haven’t gotten your dad a gift yet check out these last minute ideas.

Gift Ideas For Trucking Dads

First of all, you can save your dad some money. He needs to file his 2290 soon and he can use the promo code FATHERSDAY17 to get 10% of filing his return. This discount lasts until Monday the 17th.

These gift ideas are a little less emotional than Mother’s Day gifts. Dads are the ones who teach us how to ride bikes and to heal our wounds by rubbing some dirt in it, they want stuff that’s cool, funny, or that they actually need!

Tech wise you could blow your dad’s mind by getting him a dash cam to record all the close calls he sees on the road. Then instead of trying to describe how two cars barely missed hitting each other or how he saw a really cool dog on a motorcycle, he can show you!

Your dad probably drinks coffee because you tired him out when you were younger, and now he’s addicted. Why not surprise him with a portable coffee pot for his rig so he can brew coffee at any time?

Along with that coffee pot be sure to include a mug that supports his favorite sports team or a funny saying to show off.  “I just dropped a load” and “I don’t always fill out a log book, but when I do it’s made up” are funny examples that are also found on t-shirts.

Another good idea might be to get your dad a super cool wireless headset that he can use to answer phone calls head free. When you aren’t talking to him he will still need something to listen to though, so maybe you could introduce your old man to podcasts. There are shows about almost everything from sports to trucking and even murder mysteries.

Don’t forget about how your dad needs entertainment for when he’s parked overnight too. Consider getting him a wifi hotspot so he can play computer games or watch Netflix. There are some awesome manly shows he can stream like the Vikings, Ice Road Truckers, House of Cards, and more.

Men don’t like shopping for themselves, so if you pick up something your dad needs for him then it’s like two gifts in one. See if he needs a new electric shaver to keep his awesome trucking beard maintained, a new pair of polarized sunglasses, a more comfortable seat cushion, etc.

You know your pops likes to eat, he has his dad bod to maintain. Go ahead and get him a stash of his favorite chips, candy, and more to enjoy on the road. You could also plan a dinner or breakfast at his favorite restaurant to give him a good meal after all the skimping he’s had to do with fast food on the road.

Happy Father’s Day

No one knows your dad better than you do, we’re sure you’ll find the perfect gift to show him how much he means to you. We would like to take a moment to thank all dads out there, for teaching your kids everything you know and crafting perfect drivers! Also, remember that the sooner to pre-file your 2290 the better!

Once you’ve downloaded the app and logged into your account you’ll start by selecting if you would like to file for the 2016 tax year or pre-file for the 2017 season. Then you’ll enter the basic information for your business, like the name and address. Your personal information will be fine if you’re a sole proprietor.

Then you’ll need to enter your EIN or Employee Identification Number. You’ll need an EIN to complete your form if you need one you can apply with the IRS for one online. It will take about 15 days for your EIN to be entered in the e-filing system.

Next, you’ll enter your tax year, first use month, and your vehicle information including the VIN or Vehicle Identification Number, taxable gross weight, and if it was used for any special uses, such as agricultural purposes.

Don’t worry about doing any complicated calculations yourself, because we will automatically calculate the amount of Heavy Vehicle Use Tax you owe for you, so you don’t under or over pay. Then you can pay the amount you owe to the IRS via direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal, EFTPS, or with a check or money order.

After you’ve paid the IRS we will perform an audit check on your form to catch any basic errors and we will present you with a summary check of your information to double check and make sure that you entered all of your information correctly.

Last but not least you’ll electronically sign your form with a 5 digit code of your choice and transmit it directly to the IRS. Then once the IRS stamps your Schedule 1, generally within minutes you’ll receive a copy via email.
