IRS Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290
The IRS Form 2290 is used to calculate the Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes that are due for the Tax Period of July 1 - June 30. The Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes (HVUT) are calculated based on a vehicle's Taxable Gross Weight. Every heavy vehicle with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more must file the IRS Form 2290 each year.
Form 2290 Schedule 1
Schedule 1 of Form 2290 is essentially the receipt of filing. It is the proof that you have filed your 2290 with the IRS and have either paid your taxes or are aware that you need to pay them. A Form 2290 Schedule 1 stamped with the IRS watermark is usually the most requested proof of legitimate trucking by a owner. If your carrier or DMV is asking for paperwork, your stamped Schedule 1 is probably what they are asking for.

If you sold your vehicle, or it stolen or destroyed, you can claim a refund for whatever excess taxes you paid on it with Schedule 6 (taxes paid from your 2290 only).
