Watch Out! Avoid These Scams in the Trucking Industry

We’ve all heard the horror stories—whispers in a dark rest stop about a friend of a friend losing his freight, his job, and eventually his house to a scam.

It can happen to anybody, these days.

In the trucking industry, we like to watch out for each other.

No matter what side of the rig you stand on, there are scams running about. So watch out for these!

Fake Documents for Drivers

Sometimes a driver may receive a fax, letter, or email from someone with a Washington, D.C. contact and an official looking Department of Transportation letterhead.

The goal of this communication is to scare the driver into releasing their financial information, and then identity theft is easy.

Remember, a government agency will never ask you to disclose financial information unprovoked—no matter how official the letterhead.

If you are contacted by someone asking these questions, contact the agency yourself to find out if there is a real concern.

And remember to only use IRS-authorized e-filing services when it comes to your taxes.

Company Independent Contractor Scams

Now, there are sometimes mix-ups—and this could honestly happen by mistake.

But there are a few companies who think they can list employees as independent contractors to avoid compliance with Department of Labor regulations, IRS regulations, DOT regulations, and OSHA regulations.

Shady companies will see this as an opportunity to add to their bottom line, since they’re excused from covering employee expenses.

Since independent contractors aren’t employees, the driver ends up taking full responsibility in event of a citation, violation, or accident. Or they can lose their employment!

Of course, when tax time rolls around and the employee sees a 1099 instead of a W-2, things become more clear.

And by no means is there a problem with using independent contractors, but just make sure you know your status before it‘s too late.

Freight Identity Theft

It’s a pretty nasty scheme, really. Thieves will assume the identity of a trucking company from a deactivated and dormant carrier number from the Department of Transportation.

They then pretend to be a long-established firm with a good safety record, and will go as far as having fake paperwork and documents.

The cons then offer lower bids to freight brokers, and show up to the proper companies. It’s only once they get the goods that they vanish into thin air.

And just like your social security number can be stolen, your employer identification number (EIN) is always at risk for business scams!

Stay vigilant and protect yourself from business identity fraud.

We know you’re worried about security, so rest assured that the ExpressTruckTax servers, data centers, and US-based customer support center are all in good hands. Your EIN is safe with us!

Whether you need to file your 2290s or generate an IFTA report, we’re here to offer you a safe and secure solution.

Will These 5 Technologies Help or Hurt Truckers?

You hear it all the time, technology will kill the trucking industry.

We know that robo-truckers are supposed to show up with their drone-powered rigs and shut down the whole transportation field.

Until the Terminator has as much intuition as a veteran trucker, we’re not gonna lose sleep over it.

But what new technologies are being developed to help truckers?

From heartbeats to healthy sleep, we’re looking at 5 new and helpful technologies headed your way.

Seats That Monitor You

You spend most of your day planted in the seat of your truck—it’s the perfect way to monitor everything from your heart health to your alertness.

With increased monitoring, companies are hoping to create more awareness and prevent dangerous heart attacks from taking down truckers.

The seat could even alert a driver to pull over and await an ambulance’s arrival!

A Steering Wheel and Gearshift That Feel You

With your hands strapped across the wheel, you know you’re in control of your rig. But are you in control of your health?

With biometric telemetry built directly into the hands-on parts of the truck, it will be easy to track health stats with your steering wheel or gearshift.

Imagine the possibilities when it comes to monitoring health this way—in every vehicle, drivers can be alerted if they’re above the drinking limit, if their diabetes is affecting their blood sugar, or if their blood pressure is dangerously high.

Your Mobile Tech Will Help

As phones continue to improve in speed and quality, we are going to see more mobile health advancements.

Mobile technology doesn’t just mean smartphones either! Smartwatches, fitness bands, and mobile monitoring devices will continue to improve and diversify into health and wellness.

Cameras Watching out for You

Nothing is more helpful in an accident than a good dash cam. But dash cams may just be the start. Mitsubishi is developing technology that will analyze truck movement, the driver’s expression, and heart rate to monitor fatigue and general health conditions.

Cameras are a touchy subject, though, because nobody wants their privacy invaded. Especially truckers—so this will be a growing technology to watch.

Improved Sleep with Better Devices

Sleeping makes the difference between a slow motion driver and lightning fast trucker! We’ve given out sleep advice before, but advice isn’t going to help you if you have sleep apnea.

Advancements in CPAP machines will not only increase their portability, but they can also record the quality, duration, and patterns of sleep. That would open the door to better predictions for drowsy driving.

As far as technologies that will help you, we only know so much of what the future will bring. What we know now is that the HVUT e-filing from ExpressTruckTax is technology that works for you now!

Do you think cameras will help your health? What about biometric seats? Let us know on Facebook!

5 Signs You’re not Ready for the Road

Everybody has their pre-trip rituals. Sometimes that means stocking up on hygiene essentials, replenishing your nonperishable foods, or maybe catching up on this month’s reruns.

Oh, and don’t forget, ensuring that you and your truck are ready for the road.

Obviously, inspecting and maintaining your vehicle are top priorities, but there are a few other concerns to watch out for.

Skimping out on Truck Inspections

Now, this goes without saying… but don’t skip over your pre-trip inspection. They’re designed not only for your safety, but to save you money as well.

I mean, it’s a lot cheaper to fix a problem when you’re parked than it is to have a flipped over trailer.

Yeah, that was one of the harder parts of getting your CDL—it’s a lot of memorization. But as a transportation professional, it’s what sets you apart from the rest.

You Ride Without Trip Planning

Experience is the best teacher you can have in this field. And the experienced truckers know you need to plan your trip ahead of time.

Download a trucking management program like TruckLogics, and use ProMiles for precise trip routing. ProMiles only chooses routes appropriate for heavy vehicles, eliminating costly mistakes, detours, and out-of-route mileage.

With TruckLogics and ProMiles, you can quote services to clients with more accuracy, instead of just rough estimations.

Plus, your recordkeeping afterward will increase thanks to one-click Trip Sheet generation!

Your House is in Disarray

We’ve mentioned tidying your cab before, but what about your house? Maybe you didn’t get to mow the lawn before heading out, or you know it’s time to do some Spring cleaning. Or on an even more personal note, someone in your family needs you.

Remember, downtime is important. Not just for your mental health, but for your financial livelihood, as well.

You’re Just Going to Eat Fast Food Again

Come on, guys. We’ve talked about this. We know you don’t have a lot of time to plan meals, but with just a little bit of planning, you can eat a nutritious diet that keeps you away from the Big Mac.

You’re gonna spend most of your day sitting as you drive, so eating healthy enough to keep the pounds away will offset the decrease in calorie burning activity. And besides, you can always just do a trucker workout when you get off the road.

You Don’t Have a Plan for Tax Filing

We hate to remind you of this ourselves, but your IFTA filing deadline is just around the corner.

That’s right, IFTA is coming!

And planning is everything when it comes to generating your IFTA report. Get ready for the upcoming deadline by calculating your IFTA tax amount ahead of time with the Fuel Tax Calculator.

And you remember all those Trip Sheets you generated with TruckLogics? Yeah, adding Trip Sheets to ExpressIFTA is easy.

Proactivity is the key to being a successful trucker. Ask yourself if you’re ready for the road!

As far as your IFTA report goes, if you run into any questions, the dedicated customer support team over at ExpressIFTA is ready to help! Give us a call at 704.234.6005 or shoot us an email at Support@ExpressIFTA.com.

What are your pre-trip rituals before hitting the road? Are you ready for every occasion?

Now THOSE Are Heavy Vehicles!

Alright, we like to talk about heavy vehicles around here. That’s no surprise to anybody.

But there are a few REALLY BIG vehicles out there.

Sure, there are big vehicles like this.

But there are some other big vehicles out there, like triple trucks, customized rigs, and road trains.

Sounds hard to handle!

Double & Triple Trucks

Now every now and then, you might see a few double and triple trucks here in the states. You’re more likely to see the a Rocky Mountain double, a B-Train, or a triple trailer.

In the US, most rigs on public roads are limited to two trailers. Some states allow triple trailers, but that’s restricted to less populous states (Like Idaho and Montana).

Triples tend to get used for less-than-truckload freight hauled over long distances.

Custom Rigs

We do have some large trucks around here, like the Red Giant.

A one-of-a-kind, customized 1990 Diamond Reo, this truck dwarfs any rig beside it. The truck runs with two giant LED screens, which lets the owner-operators offer mobile advertising wherever the rig takes them.

Road Trains

Now, if we’re talking road trains—which are almost exactly what they sound like—you have some really big rigs. Instead of linked train cars on a rail, you have a half dozen trailers hitched together, towed by a single rig on a lonely highway.

The much longer road trains tend to dominate Australian and Argentinian roads.

In 2006, an Australian built Mack truck with 112 semi-trailers weighing in at 1,300 tons and reaching 4,836 ft 11 in long, pulled a load 328 feet to recapture the record for the longest road train (multiple loaded trailers) ever pulled with a single rig.

I’d hate to see the taxes on that setup!

As for your HVUT tax filing, we’re your one-stop shop for managing multiple vehicles.

Have you heard about TruckZone from ExpressTruckTax? It’s like a digital garage, allowing you to securely store your general vehicle and tax information in one organized, accessible location.

Once you have your entire fleet organized, you can e-file your HVUT 2290s for specific trucks with ease, and find a specific Schedule 1 or 2290 without digging through stacks of file folders and paper documents.

And with a deadline just a few months away, it’s best to get started now! If you have any questions about using TruckZone, give us a call at 704.234.6005.

What’s the biggest truck you’ve ever dealt with?

4 HVUT Errors You’ve Already Made

Sure, Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes aren’t due until August, but do you know the most common errors?

While we have audit and error checks built into ExpressTruckTax, there are always a some user-end errors you need to watch out for.

The last thing you want is for one to slip by the cracks and go unnoticed until it’s too late!

Hopefully you haven’t made any of these, but we will do our best to guide you through these troubled waters.

Your VIN Was Mistyped

Honestly, this is one of the most common errors we hear about. With vehicle identification numbers being a 17-digit string of characters, who can be blamed?

Since these codes are frequently entered wrong, we know that plenty of truckers have to deal with this.

Now, really this is between you and the IRS, because you might file with the wrong VIN and never know. Yeah, that’ll be bad if you need to present your schedule 1 to some aspect of the law.

And don’t forget, your VIN numbers will never contain an O, I, or Q, unless the truck is over 20 years old.

So if you entered the wrong VIN and filed with ExpressTruckTax, log back in and get a free VIN correction. If you didn’t file with us, you can still file for a VIN correction after paying a small fee.

You Are Paper Filing… Because It’s the Stone Age

Sorry, we kid. We are a little gung-ho about e-filing, so we like to rag on paper every now and then.

But really, paper filing puts you and your trucking profession in unnecessary danger. The error rate on typical paper filing sits around 21%, while e-filing is less than 1%.

What other reasons should you e-file? I dunno, you hate doing paperwork by hand, and you’re not a mathematician. That counts for us, at least.

Plus you will get your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes.

You Don’t Need a New 2290, You Paid on Your Old Truck

Oh yeah, you paid. For your last truck, not your new one!

Just because you have 2290s for your old vehicle, doesn’t mean you’re set on your new one. The IRS does not believe in a 1-1 truck transference, so you can’t either.

That means you need to register your new truck like you would your old one, except you e-file your 2290 based on the first month you use it.

Speaking of First Month

If you bought your truck this year, you will have a first used month unique to the purchase at a prorated amount.

Basically, you’re only charged from the first month you use the truck instead of your typical July/August filing date.

Since August is the deadline, you will still have to pay that deadline, even if you bought your truck in May or June.

Don’t make this common mistake! And if you did, it’s better to file late than never.

And One More, as a Bonus…

You’re not e-filing with ExpressTruckTax! With our built-in error checks, easy to use e-filing system, and Truck Zone business center, you have plenty of reasons to e-file with us.

Plus you get your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes, so you can get back on the road in no time.

If you have any questions, give us a call at 704.234.6005. Or shoot us an email at Support@ExpressTruckTax.com.

Are YOU making these 2290 errors?

Ready for April? 3 Important Moves to Make RIGHT NOW!

Alright Trucking Nation, April is here! And that means a few things for us in the transportation industry.

What’s going on in April? Well, your personal taxes and fuel taxes are both due. And there’s a chance for you to work on your health!

Extend Your Taxes

First up, your personal taxes are due April 18th. Normally they would be due April 15th, but the weekend buys you some time! And you can get even more time with a Personal Tax Extension Form 4868.

Let’s face it, filing your taxes isn’t fun. But do you know every deduction a trucker can file? There are a lot, so don’t sit on this! And yeah, finding some more deductions doesn’t make it fun. But it makes filing a little bit easier, don’t you think?

Whether you’re filing by yourself or you have someone filing for you, you can get an extension for an additional 6 months to file Form 1040, 1040A, 1040-EZ, 1040NR, 1040NR-EZ, 1040-PR, or 1040-SS.

Let’s Get Ready for IFTA!

Alright, we know you don’t want to hear all this tax stuff. If you’re anything like me, it just gives you anxiety. But that’s why we try to make things easier.

How easy? Well, the same login credentials you use for your ExpressTruckTax account works for ExpressIFTA. So you can generate your fuel tax report with the same ease of use that you expect for your 2290s.

How else can you get ready? Instead of waiting until the last moment, take this next week to gather all of your fuel records and trip sheets.

If you’re not running around like a chicken with your head cut off, IFTA is pretty easy, really.

And if you want to make your next round of IFTA even easier, pick up an app like TruckLogics. With this handy cloud-based trucking management software, you can generate and send invoices, create profit & loss reports, and use ProMiles for one-click trip sheets.

Now Is the Time to Get Healthy

Okay, you were supposed to get healthy at the new year. But you didn’t!

If your diet fell apart three weeks into the new year, let April be the month you get healthy!

How? Well, eat better. Change your diet to focus on whole grains, whole veggies, and lean meats and proteins. Yeah, that doesn’t sound as great as a bucket of hot wings, but you need to make some changes.

After you get your diet in check, find time to exercise! We know you can! No excuses. In fact, we’ve told you how to turn your trucking environment into a portable gym. So don’t let that stop you.

Besides, you want that beach bod, don’t you? Ha!

So use April as your time to shine with your personal taxes, fuel taxes, and physical well being. If you have any questions about e-filing your fuel taxes, give the support experts a call at 704.234.6005 or an email at Support@ExpressTruckTax.com.

Are YOU ready for April?

Don’t Make These Mistakes When Buying a New Truck

We made it through winter, and Spring is upon us. Goodbye dangerous, icy roads!

And not only are plants springing up from the ground, but truckers are thinking, “Hey, why don’t I get rid of my old rig and buy a new one?”

And we’re right there with you, Trucking Nation. Sometimes it’s better to just say goodbye to that old truck and hit the road on something shiny and new (to you, at least).

But beware, there are mistakes you can make when you purchase a new vehicle!

So we’ve thrown together a few tips to help you avoid those new truck-buying mistakes.

Don’t Blow Your Budget

Factor in how you are using the truck, your distance traveled, and even what you will be hauling. The last thing you want is to drop all your cash on a beast of a truck and discover that you’re not even using it right.

And we know you don’t want to buy something that can barely haul an empty flatbed. So list out your truck requirements AND your expected uses on a sheet of paper, on your phone, or anywhere you can keep track.

From this list, create a BUDGET. Allow yourself time to look over it and figure out what you want to buy.

And don’t go into any purchase blind! Calculate the costs you’ll incur for the purchase, as well as your insurance, taxes, and all the accoutrement (that’s French for extra stuff).

You should probably aim your budget forward, too. You’ll need to factor in your cost of maintenance so that you don’t break the bank a few months down the road.

Don’t Pick a Lemon

While we say find something within your budget, make sure you also appeal to your better creature comforts.

You’re gonna be stuck in this rig on the road for who knows how long, so make sure you can live comfortably in the thing. Check the amenities, so that you don’t end up in a truck that is hard to live in.

We don’t know if you co-drive or bring pets with you, but factor in your comfort level, your partner’s, and your pet’s.

Don’t Bungle Your Taxes

Sometimes it sounds like we’re beating a dead horse, but we have to say it. No matter what, your 2290s don’t transfer!

That means you need to file for a new 2290 when you get that new truck. We’ve come across plenty of truckers who either don’t know this or think it doesn’t apply to them. It does!

And it’s an easy fix, too. You just need to e-file Form 8849 and claim a credit and you’re good!

Don’t Settle

There’s nothing worse than buyer’s remorse. Don’t settle for a new rig that doesn’t meet the quality standards you know you need. I mean a deal is a deal, but make sure you’re happy with it at the end of the day.

And don’t forget, there’s an IFTA deadline on May 2nd! Head over to ExpressIFTA for the easiest way to generate your fuel tax report.

As always, if you have any questions about e-filing your HVUT 2290s or generating your upcoming IFTA report, give us a call at 704.234.6005.

Movie Star Truckers: Big Rigs on the Silver Screen

With all the crazy stuff you see on the road, sometimes it feels like you’re in a movie. Heck, we even know of a few movie star truckers.

We’re taking a similar page today and looking at some fictional truckers (heck, a spaceship and a anthropomorphic robot truck as well).

Furiosa and the War Rig

The world might be nuked to a crisp, but transportation goes on! Well, at least we know there’s one trucker still at it in George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road. Equipped with a well-armed War Rig, Furiosa sets out on a refueling mission-turned-human-trafficking rescue mission and shows us what Post-Apocalyptic trucking looks like.

Maximum Overdrive

When some bad space juju passes over Earth, machines come to life. One of those is a Green Goblin-masked 18-wheeler that is just happy to flatten a few pedestrians in Stephen King’s Maximum Overdrive.

Over the Top

In Over the Top, Sylvester Stallone plays a struggling trucker who arm wrestles to make some extra cash. Really a tale of father-son bonding, this movie ends with an epic arm-wrestling match that determines everything.

Every Which Way But Loose

Alright, you got Dirty Harry and an orangutan named Clyde in an 18-wheeler, what’s not to like? Every Which Way But Loose stars Clint Eastwood as a trucker making side cash as a bare-knuckle fighter. Panned by critics, it still turned in $85 million over a $5 million budget, so I’m sure both Eastwood and the Orangutan had little to worry about.

Optimus Prime

Come on, you knew we were going to mention Optimus Prime! He’s the leader of the Transformers, and is LITERALLY a big rig. Starting as a Kenworth K100 cab over truck, Optimus has most recently appeared as both a modified Peterbilt 379 and a custom built Western Star. Talk about your upgrades!

Millennium Falcon

Okay, okay—this is a spaceship and not a tractor trailer—we admit it. But when you think about it, Han and Chewie haul freight, they hate the government, and there’s a whole weird co-driving situation they worked out already. Sounds like space truckers to me!

We’re not sure if orangutans can file fuel taxes, or if Optimus Prime gets offended when you call him a heavy vehicle. But we do know that we have some upcoming deadlines! There is an IFTA deadline on May 2nd, and an HVUT 2290 deadline on August 31st.

If you have any trouble, call our dedicated support team at 704.234.6005, or shoot them an email at Support@ExpressTruckTax.com.

Who is your favorite fictional trucker?

4 Legs and 18 Wheels: Truckers With Pets

We’re always talking about trucker health, but we’ve missed one key factor that can help your well being.

Get a pet! Cat or dog, doesn’t matter—having a furry friend in your cab can have major benefits.

Okay, we know that truck cabs are a tight fit, but with so many different pet breeds and temperaments, there has to be something that can fit your lifestyle.

Whatever pet you choose, just make sure they don’t take the wheel!

The Benefits of Pets

Why a pet? Well, studies have illuminated this for us. One study found a reduction in minor health problems after the subjects acquired a cat or a dog. On top of that, dog owners get considerably more exercise thanks to the constant need for walks.

Now, we’re not saying not having a dog or a cat will hurt you—we’re just saying there are some benefits. Plus, you won’t be lonely anymore if your four legged friend is chilling out with you every day.

For example, numerous studies have found that just owning or petting a dog can lower your blood pressure.

Well how should you get a dog? We’re big proponents of adopting from shelters and pet rescues around here, since it’s usually more affordable and you’re saving a life!

Tips for a Happy & Healthy Co-Pilot

What’s next? Make sure you pet proof your rig! While your new pet is getting accustomed to the rig, block access to your clutch and brakes. You can lighten up once they are familiar with your truck.

Make sure your pets can’t hide under seats or in other dangerous areas.

Keep your medicine, food, and trash secure and away from a curious pet. Both cats and dogs can dig their way into some trash, so keep an eye out for it.

Make sure you have adequate water, food, and medicine (if necessary) for your pets. Dogs are pretty good about not using the bathroom where they sleep, so keep an eye out for clues they need to go.

Safety First for Your Pets

Also, pets living in trucks will get used to certain noises—like rumbling engines and horns—so make sure you keep them leashed while outside. The last thing you want is a truckstop funeral for your dog!

Finally, never leave your pet unattended in a rig, especially in extreme weather conditions! If you do have to in an emergency, make sure it’s only for a few minutes and that the truck is at a decent, comfortable temperature.

Until your dog learns how to e-file your HVUT 2290s, we know you’ll need us around. We’re here to answer any of your questions about e-filing, VIN corrections, and 2290 amendments.

Our dedicated customer support team can be reached by live chat on our website, by phone at 704.234.6005, and by email at support@ExpressTruckTax.com. We look forward to hearing from you!

Do you keep a cat or a dog with you in the cab? Let us know about your fuzzy co-driver in the comments!
