The Stamped Schedule 1: How to Retrieve It- Anywhere!

With the end of the year approaching fast, we’re entering the season for registration renewals. One of the documents you’ll need is the stamped Schedule 1. Do you know where yours is?

Your stamped Schedule 1 is the golden ticket to maintaining your authority. Your entire livelihood rests on a single, fragile, highly flammable & oh-so-easy to lose piece of paper–no pressure, right?!

Not if you use ExpressTruckTax. Whether you misplaced your precious paper or have no idea what it is in the first place, I’m about the break it down for you.

What Is the Stamped Schedule 1?

The stamped Schedule 1 serves as proof that you filed and paid your annual heavy vehicle use tax. The watermark, a faint symbol in the middle of the page, indicates that the return was submitted to & accepted by the IRS. If that watermark is missing, the Schedule 1 is not valid.

Why Do I Need It?

It’s always a good idea to have your current Schedule 1 handy. Just keep a copy in your glove box. For instance, Canadian truckers crossing the border into the USA are required to present their current stamped Schedule 1 before they’re allowed to enter.

The Schedule 1 is also needed for obtaining tags & registrations. When renewing your yearly IFTA license, IRP registration, etc, the current year’s stamped Schedule 1 is one of the supporting documents required for renewal.

Where Can I Find It?

Luckily, ExpressTruckTax makes it easy to receive your Stamped Schedule 1, anytime and anywhere. First, we automatically email it to you as soon as your return has been accepted by the IRS, which is typically within a few minutes. You can even receive it on weekends or holidays if you E-file with us and choose to pay your HVUT by check or money order!

We also offer additional options for receiving your stamped Schedule 1. When E-filing, you can choose to receive your 2290 with the Schedule 1 via postal mail or fax. And we’ll fax it to anyone of your choosing- automatically- even to your carrier to save you the trouble of doing it!

Retrieve Your Stamped Schedule 1- Anytime

But what if you accidentally delete that all-important email? Or, what if you need a hard copy, but you didn’t request the hard copy from us?

Good news–It’s never too late! You can login to your ExpressTruckTax account and access your 2290 and stamped Schedule 1 any time. It’s always available to view or download right from your Dashboard. And if you’re on the road, remember, we’re as portable as you are. Login from your smartphone with our mobile site or from your tablet with our free iOS and Android apps.

If you need a hard copy, but don’t have a printer, that’s no problem either! You can still elect to receive your return via postal mail or fax at any point after you E-file. To fax your Schedule 1, just login, select the appropriate return, and enter the fax number of your choosing.

To receive it via postal mail, simply call our Support Heroes at 704.234.6005. or shoot them an email at support@expresstrucktax.com. Let them know your situation, and they’ll get that Schedule 1 mailed to you in a heartbeat.

No matter where you’re truckin’, ExpressTruckTax makes it easy to retrieve your vital tax information, day & night, 365. Something that important shouldn’t be locked in a cabinet somewhere without a back-up.

We are your back up. Paper is unreliable, but you can always rely on us.

Exceeding the Mileage Limit: E-filing Form 2290 Amendments

‘Tis the season to E-file Form 2290 Amendments! Everyone recently E-filed the 2290 yearly renewal, and now, some are noticing errors or changes that need to be made.

We’ve already covered how to speedily E-file an amendment for increased gross vehicle weight. Today, the saga continues!

The second kind of 2290 Amendment is for suspended vehicles that exceed the mileage use limit. Suspended vehicles (Filed as Category W) can only travel up to 5,000 miles during the tax year (7,500 miles or fewer for agricultural vehicles).

This limit applies to the total miles the vehicle drives on public highways during the tax year, regardless of the number of owners.

So what happens when that trip odometer reaches 5,001? Well, that means it’s time to pull over, whip out your tablet or laptop, and quickly E-file an amendment with ExpressTruckTax!

Here’s how to E-file a 2290 Amendment in 10 minutes or less:

*Note: Be sure to E-file your amendment by the last day of the month following the month in which you exceeded the mileage limit.

Step 1: Get Situated

-Returning users login or new users create an account.
-Click “Start” under Form 2290 Amendments.
-Choose the kind of amendment. Click start under “Mileage Exceeded.”

Step 2: Vehicle Info

-Choose to amend a return E-filed with us, or choose to amend a return that was paper-filed or E-filed elsewhere.
-Select the correct tax year, the vehicle’s first-used month, & the month the mileage limit was exceeded.
-Next choose the vehicle you are filing the amendment for, OR if you haven’t filed with us, enter the vehicle’s information like the VIN, taxable gross weight, and whether it’s used for logging.
-Finally, hit “save” or “save & add another” if you’re E-filing an amendment for more than one vehicle.

Step 3: Finish it!

-Voila! The prorated tax is calculated for you! And there was much rejoicing!
-Click “next,” and enter your method of payment. The IRS accepts Direct Debit (EFW), EFTPS, and check or money order. (No credit/debit cards.)

There’s no easier, more affordable way to E-file Form 2290 Amendments! No scary IRS forms, no tax jargon, no calculators! Just 10 minutes of pure, E-filing bliss.

Gross Vehicle Weight Increase: Easy E-filing of Form 2290 Amendments

It happens. We all put on a little extra weight now and again–especially around the holiday season! Fortunately, this weight gain comes with minimal consequences (like having to break out those elastic-waist sweatpants)!

But what happens when your truck gains weight? An increase in the taxable gross weight of a vehicle means an increase in the heavy vehicle use tax owed if this weight increase bumps your truck up to

the next weight category.

Are you ready to calculate the prorated tax & break out those partial-period tax tables?

No? Well, good! We at ExpressTruckTax would never put you through such torture!

If you’ve used any of our programs or apps before, you know we are pro-simplicity and anti-calculator! Whether you E-filed this year’s Form 2290 with us or not, E-filing a Form 2290 Amendment is super easy with ExpressTruckTax because we do all of the calculating for you!

Here’s a Step-by-Step guide to E-filing an amendment for increased vehicle weight.

*Note: Be sure to submit the amendment by the last day of the month following the month in which the weight increase occurred.

Step 1: Get started!

-Returning users login or new users create an account.
-Click “Start” under Form 2290 Amendments.
-Choose the kind of amendment. Click start under “Taxable Gross Weight Increase.”

Step 2: Input Vehicle Info

-Select vehicle first-used month.
-Select the amended month, the month in which the weight change occurred.
-If you E-filed your 2290 with us this year, select the vehicles to be amended from that return and choose the new weight class.
-If the return was not filed with us, enter the vehicle’s VIN and the new weight class.
-If you are changing the weight of more than 1 vehicle, click “Save & Add Another;” otherwise, click “Save” to complete.
-Rejoice as the tax is prorated for you! I told you that you wouldn’t need a calculator!

Step 3: Transmit the Return

-Choose from three methods of payment to pay your increased tax to the IRS. As always, we offer Direct Debit (EFW), EFTPS, and check or money order.
-Time for the Instant Audit! Our system scans your return for errors, just one more step to ensure that you get the green light!
-And you’re done! Securely transmit your amendment to the IRS and receive your new stamped Schedule 1 within minutes!

And that’s all, folks. Three easy steps with just a few clicks here & a dash of typing there. All in all, you’ll be done in 10 minutes or less thanks to our stream-lined process.

We also offer speedy E-filing of 2290 Amendments for VIN corrections (for FREE!) & for increases in mileage. If you’re not sure which amendment to file, don’t be shy! Ask our Support Heroes! They’re available via 24/7 email support at support@expresstrucktax.com. They’re also on live chat, or just a phone call away at 704.234.6005.

Three Ways to Pay your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax!

You’ve come to it at last. The final step of filing your annual HVUT: paying the IRS. Well lucky for you, we’ve not only streamlined the process of completing your Form 2290, but we’ve also made payment convenient as well!

When you E-file your Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax, there are not one–not two–but three!– three easy

& secure ways to pay the IRS!

While the IRS no longer accepts credit card payments, you can still conveniently pay by Direct Debit, EFTPS, or by Check or Money Order.

Direct Debit/ EFW (Electronic Funds Withdrawal)

  • The fastest way to pay!
  • This option is available only if you E-file.
  • The IRS initiates a debit from your bank account.
  • Must provide your Bank Account and Routing Numbers (located at the bottom of a check).
  • You can cancel a payment by contacting a U.S. Treasury Financial Agent, but no later than 2 business days before the payment date.
  • With this payment, the IRS will not accept your return on a weekend or holiday. It must be completed on the next business day.

EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System)

  • A free service provided by the U.S. Dept. of the Treasury, it’s available by phone or online 24/7.
  • You must register with this system 5-7 business days before you need to make your first payment. Visit http://www.eftps.gov or call 1-800-555-4477.
  • To enroll, you will need your E.I.N., bank account and routing number, and address and name as they appear on IRS documents.
  • With this option, you can E-file your Form 2290 365 days a year, day or night.
  • You can even schedule a business payment up to 120 days in advance.
  • Your payment must be scheduled at least 1 business day before your taxes are due!

Check or Money Order

  • If you need your Stamped Schedule I on the weekend, this is the only way to pay!
  • When paying by check or money order, a completed payment voucher called the 2290-V must accompany the payment.
  • This is page 5 of your completed Form 2290. Luckily, we autocomplete this voucher for you, and you can print it from your account any time!
  • Detach the voucher and send it with the payment, but do not staple the voucher to your payment.
  • Do not send cash.
  • Make your check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. Include your name, address, EIN, “IRS Form 2290,” and the date (as entered in Box 3) on your payment.
  • Mail your payment with the 2290- V to the following address:
    • Internal Revenue Service,
      P.O. Box 804525,
      Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525
With three secure ways to pay, you’re free to choose whichever suits you best! And you can relax knowing that whatever option you choose, we’ve gone above and beyond to make it fast and easy.

FAQ: IRS Form 2290 HVUT

It’s TruckerTuesday and the team at ExpressTruckTax hopes you are all having a great week so far. The start of Form 2290 HVUT filing season begins on July 1st. Since the 2290 is filed annually, I’m here to re-jog your memory with a few frequently asked questions so you can get it filed and keep on truckin’. Let’s get started….

1. What is Form 2290 HVUT?
This form is used to figure and pay the tax due on heavy use vehicles used during the period with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 lbs or more. You will need to file IRS Form 2290 for the tax if a taxable highway motor vehicle is registered, or required to be registered, in your name under state, District of Columbia, Canadian, or Mexican law at the time of its first used during the tax.

2. What evidence of payment do you present to the DMV to show that you have file Form 2290?
The DMV will ask to see proof that you have paid your Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes. The proof that you will show them is your Stamped Schedule 1. When e-filing, the IRS will apply a digital watermark (the stamp) in the center of the page that proves you have paid the amount of tax due. Your Stamped Schedule 1 is all you will need to provide proof of payment.

3. What if my VIN is less than 17 characters?
Your alphanumeric VIN can be any amount up to 17 characters. It should not be more than 17 characters and should not include the letters I, O, or Q. If your VIN has the letter O, replace it with the number zero (0) when entering in your vehicle information.

4. What is a five-digit pin?
When e-filing through ExpressTruckTax, we ask you to enter a 5-digit pin before you can transmit your return to the IRS. The 5 digits can be any number you wish. It only acts as a digital signature to prove that you are an actual person transmitting the form. This is not a number you will need to remember or enter in anywhere else when e-filing.

5. What is a partial period tax table?
A Partial Period Tax Table is used to figure the amount of tax owed for vehicles first used after July of the current tax period. Here is a direct link to the IRS Partial Period Tax Table for Form 2290.

6. What is a suspended vehicle?
When a vehicle is considered ‘suspended’ that only means it does not travel more than 5,000 miles in one year (7500 miles for agricultural vehicles). Suspended vehicles are tax exempt, but if they do run more than 5,000 miles during the tax year than you will need file a 2290 Amendment for mileage limit exceeded.

These are only a few of our most frequently asked questions. Do not hesitate to contact our US-based ExpressTruckTax Support team with any questions you may have via phone: 704-234-6005 email: support@expresstrucktax.com

Understanding IRS Form 2290 Reasons for Rejection

It’s TruckerTuesday, and I hope you’ve got your ears on for some important information regarding your 2290 HVUT.  IF you don’t know what a 2290 HVUT is, let me fill you in…

Form 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, is required to be filed by the IRS if you operate a truck or other vehicle categorized as a heavy highway motor vehicle on public highways. When you e-file Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax.com your receive a Stamped Schedule 1, which serves as your proof of payment (or proof of filing if tax is not applicable) and needed at the DMV to register your tags. A copy of your Stamped Schedule 1 should be kept in your cab with all your other required documents just in case, especially with the big Road Check 2014 coming up June 3-5.

One of the best ways to avoid having your 2290 rejected by the IRS is to know the most common reasons for rejection:

Mismatch of EIN with Business Name
This particular rejection can have two meanings:

     1. The EIN that you entered does not match what information the IRS has on record. You can always call the IRS Excise Hotline at 1-866-699-4096 to find out what information the IRS has in their system.

     2. If your EIN is brand new, it takes – on average – 10 business days for the EIN to register in the IRS system for you to e-file. So if you try to e-file your 2290 the same day you receive your EIN, it will be rejected and the reason will be the “EIN does not match business name”. When your EIN is registered in the IRS system you can simply re-transmit your 2290 return (for free) and it should be accepted as long as there are no other errors.

    Routing Transit Number (RTN) Rejection
If you choose to pay your 2290 excise tax (if any) using the Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) option, a bank routing number is required. If you enter the wrong information for your routing number your 2290 will be rejected. You can correct the routing and re-transmit to the IRS and should receive confirmation of acceptance in only a few minutes.
     – Please Note: If you enter the incorrect routing number or bank account number and the return is accepted, you will need to contact the IRS to resolve the issue. So it is best to double check your numbers before transmitting to the IRS.
    Duplicate Filing of IRS 2290
Your 2290 can only be accepted by the IRS one time. If you receive this particular rejection, it means your 2290 has already been filed and confirmed by the IRS.
To avoid receiving a rejection notice, make sure your EIN and business name are correct and double check your banking information. If you do not have an EIN, you can easily apply for one on the IRS website. It is best to get one now so your EIN will be registered in the IRS filing system long before the 2290 deadline.

You can always re-transmit your rejected form. All that is needed is to follow the following video
