5 Tips to Help Truck Drivers Avoid Stress on the Road

When most of us picture long-haul trucking, we imagine an open road with scenic landscapes and the experience of driving across America.

While this is an exciting part of the job for many drivers starting out, there are also some harsh moments out on the road. The occupation can be lonely at times and exhausting, both physically and mentally.

Experts claim that the stressful aspects of life on the road add to the challenge of retaining drivers long term, the University of Arkansas even released a study, citing stress as one of the biggest contributing factors for drivers leaving the transportation industry.

Here are some tips that will help you tackle the stress and loneliness on the open road!

Stretch it Out

When you aren’t feeling your best, you can’t always perform at your best, that goes for all occupations. However, for truckers, long hours on the road mean you don’t always have the opportunity to stretch and move freely

While you can’t exactly turn your cab into a yoga studio (although if you have done this, please share, we want to know!), you can take time out of each day to incorporate some light stretches.

This video from HeathyTrucker offers some simple stretches that will have you feeling better in no time! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKuignxEZd8

Try Meditation

Keeping yourself in a healthy state of mind is a great way to ward off stress and anxiety out on the road. There are a number of great apps that offer guided meditation, calming music, and tips for reducing and handling stress.

Even taking a few minutes at the truck stop to breathe deeply can reduce your stress levels and allow you to mentally reset for the next stretch of your trip.

Better Sleep

We have heard this from our clients before, getting quality sleep on the road can be a challenge. Our bodies can’t function to the best of their ability without a good night of sleep.

While nights out on the road may never be as calm and restful as nights spent at home, there are some ways to improve the quality of sleep you are getting.

If you are kept awake by the lights and sounds of the road, we suggest trying a sleep mask. Some of them even have earbuds built-in! Put on your favorite nature sounds or music and you may forget that you’re not at home in your own bed. Need total silence? A pair of noise-canceling headphones may work for you.

Podcasts and AudioBooks

Sometimes driving for endless hours can become boring and make you feel like you are in a mental fog. One of the easiest ways to combat this is to bring some excitement and engagement to your trip. You can do this by listening to an audiobook, getting lost in a story can make time fly by.

Another option is to find some podcasts that interest you, in addition to keeping you feeling engaged, this can also give you a great sense of community even though you are alone on the road!

Bringing your Pet on the Road

If you have been scrolling through TikTok recently, you may have noticed a growing trend among truckers, bringing their pets along for the ride!

Nothing makes time on the road more relaxing than spending it with your furry friend.

Shout-out to @old_trucker, whose rescue kitten, Bobbie, will bring you many smiles as she rides shotgun in the glovebox and naps on the dashboard!

We hope that our tips bring you some restful and stress-free time on the road.

A Helpful Guide For Tackling Your IFTA Renewals This Year

Here at ExpressTruckTax, our team is all about helping you stay compliant and keeping your truck on the road. Whether that is by helping you file your Form 2290, or helping you stay ahead of other industry requirements.

It is important that you renew your IFTA licensing for 2021 on time! Many states’ renewal deadline is December 31, 2021.

With all the hustle and bustle of the holidays, we know how easy it can be to forget! So, we are breaking down the renewal process and providing all the information you need to get started!

A Crash Course in IFTA

Here’s a quick refresher. Get ready for a tongue twister! IFTA stands for International Fuel Tax Agreement. This was put into effect by the 48 states of the continental US and 10 Canadian provinces.

This is basically just a way to make the fuel tax collection and interstate commerce reporting easier for everyone involved.

Under federal law, you must abide by IFTA regulations if your vehicle is used, designed, or maintained for the transportation of persons or property, and at least one of the following is true:

  • Has two axles and a gross vehicle weight (GVW) or registered gross vehicle weight (GVW) of more than 26,000 pounds
  • Has three or more axles regardless of weight
  • Is used in combination when the weight of such combination is more than 26,000 pounds GVW or registered GVW.

If your vehicle qualifies for an IFTA license, then your vehicle also qualifies for the IFTA renewal!

Where Do I Start?

You should start with your base jurisdiction! Each year states send out a renewal packet, email, or some form of information to help you through the renewal process.

If your deadline for renewal is December 31, 2021, then you should have already received this.

If you haven’t already received your packet or email,  it’s time to give your state’s IFTA department a call. You can also check for renewal information on their website.

Renewal Requirements

Most states will allow you to renew your license online through your IFTA portal.

Generally, most jurisdictions will require that you have filed and paid for the last four quarters if you were operating before they will renew your license for the next year.

The previous four quarters include:

  • 2020, Quarter 4
  • 2021, Quarter 1
  • 2021, Quarter 2
  • 2021, Quarter 3

Now, listen closely, this is very important: your renewal must be completed, signed, and returned by the deadline to ensure that there is no delay in receiving your license and decals.

Some states will offer drivers a grace period for displaying the new decals, but this is not true for every state. You will need to check with your jurisdiction to confirm this.

IFTA is Easier with TruckLogics

If you’re searching high and low for an easier way to keep track of your IFTA and create a file-ready report each quarter, you’ve come to the right place! Our sister product, TruckLogics, provides an affordable IFTA reporting solution and more!

With TruckLogics you can easily complete your IFTA reporting and take advantage of other great features designed to streamline your trucking business.

Where Truckers Can Find Turkey Dinners For Thanksgiving 2021

Thanksgiving is already here and we gladly welcome the most turkey-filled time of the year! We thank all the members of the trucking industry who have been hard at work shipping turkeys all across the nation. About 46 million were delivered all over just so people can enjoy a traditional meal with their families.

If you are going to be OTR this holiday we hope that when you get the chance to go home you will be surrounded by family and friends to enjoy your own special turkey dinner. However, you can still enjoy a turkey meal on the road.

Cook Your Own Meal?

Of course, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can try cooking a meal right in your rig.

Our team tried just that this year with mixed results. Check out our attempt to make a Thanksgiving meal with nothing but truckstop items below!

Where Truckers Can Find Turkey

But if you want to take a break from chaotic Thanksgiving travel to enjoy your own turkey lunch or dinner complete with a slice of pie then you can head to a restaurant like Cracker Barrel. Cracker Barrels usually provide excellent truck parking and have a comfortable, at-home atmosphere to make your Thanksgiving meal warm and welcoming.

You can also head to Denny’s for an excellent turkey meal. Because a lot of truck stops like Flying J have Denny’s built-in then it will make for a convenient stop to rest, shower, enjoy some turkey, and more.

Other notable places serving up awesome Thanksgiving meals include Iron Skillet, Country Pride, and more.

But what if we told you that there are places to score free turkey? Hold onto your britches, because it’s true! Head to the Boise Stage Shop in Boise Idaho off of I-84 exit 71 for a free turkey dinner with trimmings.

You can also head to the Cowboy Cafe in Lyman, Wyoming for an all-inclusive turkey dinner. You get all the good sides like stuffing, a dinner roll, potatoes, and even a slice of pumpkin pie. Just show your CDL at these locations to enjoy the free food.

Thank You From ExpressTruckTax

Here at ExpressTruckTax, we are very thankful for all the hard work you do to deliver supplies and needs all across the nation. We sincerely hope you will find the time to celebrate Thanksgiving with your loved ones and get the chance to enjoy a warm turkey meal on Thanksgiving!

Cold Weather Safety Tips For Truckers!

The holiday season is approaching, which means the temperature outside is dropping fast throughout the country.

As these temperatures continue to fall, it’s important to be prepared for difficult driving conditions.

Here are some tips and tricks to help keep you safe and warm this winter!

Keep Proper Supplies At Hand

In case you find yourself stranded in the cold, it’s important to have the proper supplies to keep you warm and get you back on the road.

Here are some important supplies to keep in your cab that may help you this winter:

  • Extra coats, jackets, and gloves
  • Spare Blankets
  • Jumper Cables
  • Snow scrapers
  • Flashlights

Inspect Your Vehicle Before You Head Out

Freezing temperatures can often be harmful to your truck and cause further issues. Because of this, it’s important to give your truck a quick inspection before you head out so you don’t find yourself stranded and cold on the side of the road later!

Check your tire pressure, engine oil, antifreeze levels, and any other parts of your vehicle that you may be wary of. No one knows their truck better than you do!

Avoid Black Ice If You Can

Black Ice is a layer of ice that forms on top of roads and is often hard to detect. Hitting a batch of this ice can result in your tires spinning or skidding across the road.

If you hit a patch of black ice, don’t panic! Instead of mashing down on the brake and locking up your tires, try to keep the steering wheel straight and don’t hit the brake. Only make subtle turns until you pass the patch of ice, or else you could find yourself spinning out of control.

Black Ice is typically seen in the early morning and late evenings when the sun isn’t shining directly on the road. So, if you’re on the roads at this time, try to keep an eye out and avoid driving over it if possible!

If you think Black ice may be around, give yourself some extra space between other vehicles just in case they don’t see it and lose control!

Stay Safe And Bundle Up!

Everyone here at ExpressTruckTax wishes you safe travels during the upcoming season. As the demand for food and gifts skyrocket, we wish safe travels to all of our truckers out there!

Thank you for all that you do to keep this country moving forward!

Did You Receive an IRS Letter About Non-Payment?

Historically, the IRS tends to send non-payment letters before the Form 2290 payment deadline of August 31st.  However, this year, the IRS deployed a program change that delayed the posting of Form 2290 to help eliminate non-payment letters

This letter says that you failed to make your HVUT payment and gives instructions on how to submit payment.

How Can You Check To Make Sure The Payment Was Made and What Should You Do If You Have Proof Of Payment?

ExpressTruckTax encourages you to check the account you chose to make the IRS tax payment with (EFW, EFTPS, Credit/Debit, or Check/Money Order) to make sure the HVUT payment was successfully debited. If you do not remember what method of IRS tax payment you chose, you can log into your ExpressTruckTax.com account and see the method you chose on your Dashboard.

You can also click the return number to see more information about your IRS payment method selection:

If you check your account and the US Treasury debited the tax payment, you should receive another letter from the IRS within the next few weeks that shows a zero balance.

If you continue to receive IRS non-payment notices, it’s best to contact the IRS directly using the phone number located on the top right corner of the first page of the notice (800.829.0115). When you speak with the IRS agent, you want to ask them if the payment you made has been applied to the correct tax year and tax form (Form 2290).

I Checked My Account And The IRS Tax Payment Was Not Debited. What Do I Need To Do Now?

If you checked the account you chose to make the IRS tax payment (EFW, EFTPS, Credit/Debit, or Check/Money Order) and the tax payment has not been debited, you simply need to follow the instructions on the IRS notice and submit payment as soon as possible.

If you have further questions regarding IRS Form 2290 tax payments, please contact the IRS directly at 800.829.0115.

The 2022 UCR Registration Is Now Open!

On October 1st, the 2022 Unified Carrier Registration officially opened!

It is important to note that there were no price adjustments from last year, so the amount will be the same depending on your fleet size!

What is Unified Carrier Registration?

In 2005, the Unified Carrier Registration Act (UCR) became the primary method when it comes to registering commercial vehicles that travel while using interstates.

If your company is required to file the UCR, you must register and pay the fee every year based on the size of your fleet.

To continue being able to legally operate on public interstates, the UCR must be completed along with the fee paid by December 31st, 2021

What Are The UCR Fees for 2022?

The UCR fees depend on the size of the fleet that is being registered. The chart below displays the filing fees:

How Do You Register for UCR?

To register for the UCR, you will need to go to https://www.ucr.gov/ and enter your USDOT number. Once you complete this step-by-step process and pay the fee, you’re all done for the 2022 period!

It’s important to have your USDOT number on hand to make this process quicker and easier. Any vehicle that transports cargo or passengers and meets any of the following requirements must have a USDOT number:

  • Has a gross or combined weight of 10,001 lbs or more
  • Transports 8 or more passengers for compensation
  • Transports 15 or more passengers that are not for compensation
  • Transports any hazardous materials
