Merry Christmas Trucking Nation

ExpressTruckTax thanks truckers who spend Christmas OTR

What in the world? It’s Christmas already! Time really does start to fly as we get older. We hope you’re able to celebrate the holidays with your loved ones because you’ve really earned it. Truckers are responsible for making the holiday season possible as they deliver loads across the nation during the busiest time of year for trucking.

Whether you were the driver delivering Christmas trees so families could decorate their homes or the driver with a load full of Christmas flavored peeps, thank you for all of your hard work! If you can’t make it home for Christmas, don’t feel blue. Check out how to have a happy holiday.

Christmas OTR

Bring a Buddy

You don’t have to spend the day by yourself. Your spouse and kids should have some time off, so take them on a special road trip during their holiday break. They will love seeing Christmas decorations all across the country. You can also take your pup along if the people in your life are busy. Just make sure your carrier allows pets.

Eat!

Christmas is one of the few days of the year where people can shamelessly eat what they want. Throw out your calorie plan and order the glorious feast that you want. It doesn’t matter if you sit down to eat or it’s your favorite fast food option, enjoy it. You can also bring your favorite holiday treats along in your rig.

Be Talkative

You don’t have to spend Christmas quietly talking to yourself. Reach out to your friends and family by calling them. You can also use a program like Skype to video call them or to watch your kids open what Santa brought them. Also, other truckers are out and about so you can talk to them. No one loves talking like truckers do.

ExpressTruckTax thanks truckers for their hard work

Watch Something Meaningful

We know you have Netflix or Hulu set up in your rig, so use it to watch one of your favorite holiday movies. Maybe your family will be watching the same thing at home. Or you can take the time to distract yourself with a new, cool show.

Be Positive
Don’t spend the day feeling down. Remember that your hard work will pay off. You’ve probably rescheduled your holiday celebration to happen when you get home, so think about how happy your family will be once you arrive!

Happy Holidays From ExpressTruckTax

Again, thank you for all that you do from ExpressTruckTax. Even if you can’t make it home for the holidays, be sure to take the time to celebrate your favorite holiday traditions with your loved ones when you make it back.

The Ultimate Trucker Gifts

ExpressTruckTax wishes truck drivers a merry Christmas

Y’all Christmas is only a few days away, so you better finish up your shopping before you run out of time. Make a list, and check it twice, then remember to get the trucker in your life something meaningful even if they’ve been naughty or nice.

December is one of the busiest times a year for truckers as they drive all over the nation delivering presents to make Christmas possible! The driver in your life deserves a relaxing break to celebrate the holidays with you and their loved ones, so get them something great. Check out our list of the perfect trucking gifts for both the male and lady truckers.

The Best Trucking Gifts

1. Hands-Free Devices

We know you want to check up on the trucker in your life when they are on the road, but holding phones and other devices can be really distracting. Consider getting them a wireless headset so they can talk to you, hands-free. You could also get them a dash mount for their phone and wireless headphones.

2. Warm Gear

Winter is here and many states have experienced snow. Even Atlanta got a good dump! Your trucker will be up early in the morning and late at night doing pre-trip inspections in the cold. Make sure they can stay warm with utility gloves and a nice hat or coat.

Also, it’s cold OTR. Make sure they stay warm in the cab once they park with a space heater or electric blanket. The blanket doesn’t even have a lot of space because they’re available in throw sizes.

3. Coffee

Trucking is exhausting, your driver needs coffee to get moving and keep moving. Help them out by giving them the gift of instant coffee in their rig with a portable coffee maker. Also, get them a heavy duty thermos like a YETI one to keep their coffee warm for hours. Some truckers would like a mug the size of a gallon and you can also get ones with your photo on them for their favorite sports team.

4. T-Shirts

Truckers like to ride in comfort and style, that means they don’t need just any t-shirt but cool ones to flaunt at the truck stop. You can get trucking shirts with funny sayings like, “I just dropped a load.” You can also get them shirts for their favorite trucking shows like Ice Road Truckers or for awesome truck shops like Jack’s Chrome Shop.

5. Gift Cards or Cash

ExpressTruckTax thanks truckers for their hard work
Harper, the famous trucking corgi.

You can give the trucker in your life the ability to pamper themselves by allowing them to shop for themselves. With a gift card or cash, they will be able to get excited and go shop for what they really want. We know truckers are always wanting something cool from Wal-Mart or new tools from the hardware store.

6. Don’t Forget Their Pets

Many drivers take furry pals along on the road and they are more than best friends forever. They’re partners in trucking adventures. If your trucker has a dog, cat, bird or more, include them. Get them a new bone, catnip toy, sweater, bed, blanket, etc. Items that keep the pet entertained are best. The possibilities are endless and your trucker will really enjoy seeing their spoiled buddy included in the holiday festivities.

Happy Holidays From ExpressTruckTax

Here at ExpressTruckTax, we seriously appreciate all the hard work you do all year long to deliver essential needs all across the nation. We hope you get the chance to relax this holiday season with your loved ones. While your holiday is filled with classic traditions and laughs we hope the perfect trucking gift is included.

Today Is The ELD Compliance Deadline

ExpressTruckTax goes over the ELD compliance deadline

Guess what day it is! You wife’s birthday? Well maybe. Your anniversary? If it is then we hope you’re prepared…But, actually, it’s the ELD compliance deadline day. We hope you have ELDs installed in your trucks or you could have some penalties to face.

While some truckers consider the ELD mandate to be positive, many drivers feel negatively towards it. Some drivers even said they would quit if the ELD mandate took place. However, all we can do today is wait see how it will affect the trucking industry.

Today Is The ELD Compliance Deadline

If you don’t have an ELD device yet, you might wanna go ahead and order one as soon as possible, even though there is a major shortage affecting the nation. Amil Freight has a great ELD/AOBRD device with instructional demos to teach you how to use it.

Now, you don’t need to worry if you don’t have an ELD today because the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has given you a bit of time to comply with the mandate with their out-of-service-criteria (OOSC).

Under this criteria you have until April 1, 2018 to have an ELD device installed before you will be placed out of service. But this doesn’t mean you can get by without having an ELD until then.

Beginning today, December 18, roadside personal and inspectors will start checking vehicles for ELDS and reserve the right to issue expensive citations if you don’t have one. You could get away with a warning or you could get ticketed. It will all depend on who pulls you over and how lucky you are today.

Also, if you have a grandfathered AOBRD or automatic onboard recording device that was installed before today then you have until December 16, 2019 to switch to an ELD device. So, lucky you, enjoy your extra time.

ExpressTruckTax notes ELD benefits for truckers

ELDs are here today leaving us with two options. We can quit or look at the positives and we’re choosing to look at the positives because ELDs actually have some pretty good benefits. For example, they will reduce paperwork.

As a trucker with an ELD, you can say goodbye to your paper logbook because your ELD will automatically record your miles traveled per jurisdiction. You won’t have to record your odometer reading every time you cross a state line or manually record your trips by hand. Also, this information will make it easier to complete your IFTA return.

Then back at the office you and your secretary won’t have to spend hours processing and entering this information into a computer for HOS compliance because it will all be stored in one convenient location online.

Your dispatcher will also be able to track your rig live! This will allow them to provide instantly check calls, find a shop nearby if you break down, provide more accurate ETAs without distracting you, and more.

Do You Have Your ELD?

We hope you already have your ELD, but if you don’t you have a few months to get one before you will be placed out of service. Please let us know how this compliance deadline is affecting you and share your thoughts about the ELD mandate in the comment section below. Visit ExpressTruckTax for more trucking blogs.

Wreaths Across America Depends On Truckers

ExpressTruckTax supports truckers and veterans

Happy Holidays trucking nation. Hanukkah has started and Christmas is almost here. We hope you’re making the most out of the season by spending time with your loved ones and enjoying your favorite holiday traditions.

While shopping for your favorite people and crafting the perfect gift list for yourself, we know that you’re also taking the time to think of others. One major way truckers can give back to the community is to assist with Wreaths Across America.

Wreaths Across America

Wreaths Across America aims to remember and honor fallen U.S. veterans by placing a Christmas wreath on each veteran grave marker. This event takes place at the Arlington National Cemetery and many other locations across the nation.

Another purpose of this wreath laying event is to teach our nation’s children about the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families to protect our freedoms. Also, because many truckers participate in this event, they engage in educational sessions for local students to learn about the trucking industry.
The Wreaths Across America non-profit organization was founded in 2007 and has spread across all 50 states, but largely depends on the help of truckers to transport and lay enough wreaths to honor fallen heroes.

On every third Saturday of December, National Wreaths Across America Day takes place with wreath-laying ceremonies across the nation. In 2016, over a million wreaths were delivered with over 300 trucks volunteering by carrying about 5,000 wreaths per vehicle.

ExpressTruckTax thanks truckers and veterans

It takes about 60 trucks to deliver wreaths to Arlington alone and they drive from Maine to Virginia, creating the largest veterans parade in the world. This year National Wreaths Across America Day is on Saturday, December 16, and there are multiple ways you can help.

First of all, you can donate wreaths to honor the fallen men and women who sacrificed to defend our nation. Even by just donating one wreath to honor a grave helps Wreaths Across America complete their goal.

You can also donate your trucking services to help transport wreaths all over the country. There are over 1,200 locations participating. Wreaths Across America also needs volunteers to lay wreaths on graves during the event.

Those laying wreaths on veterans graves actually say the veteran’s name out loud and take a moment to thank them for their service as a way to honor their memory and keep it alive.

Even if you don’t donate your services, you can still show support by taking your family to the event. Many different ceremonies are scheduled throughout the day and the veterans parade is something you don’t want to miss.

If you’re too busy to attend National Wreaths Across America Day you can still help by attending the Wreath Retrieval/Clean-Up Day on Saturday, January 20, 2018.

Thank You Truckers And Veterans

ExpressTruckTax can never thank truckers and veterans enough. Thank you for your hard work and sacrifice. We hope you are able to take the time to head to a National Cemetery nearby to remember fallen heroes this Saturday.

Please share your thoughts on National Wreaths Across America Day in the comment section below.

File Form 2290 Before The IRS Blackout

Instantly get your stamped Schedule 1 with ExpressTruckTax

You might be hearing this song on the radio that suggests it’s the most wonderful time of the year with season greetings a cheer. It could be because we’re in the middle of the holiday season, but don’t let all that distract you from filing your taxes!

If you need to file your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290 online by the end of this month then you might as well file now with the help of ExpressTruckTax, because Christmas and the IRS blackout are coming.

File Before The IRS Blackout

Every year the IRS takes a little break, like a nap. They take all of their servers offline for maintenance and repairs. That means you can’t submit your returns to the IRS during this time, but you will still be held accountable if your return is late.

The IRS blackout will begin on December 26th, 2017 and will end in the beginning of January 2018. Also, they won’t be open on Christmas. It’s best to go ahead and file now, while you have time. As it gets closer to the blackout date you will only get even busier and don’t want to risk forgetting about your HVUT Form 2290 or you will have penalties to face.

The IRS blackout also affects those who need to complete their IRP returns this month. Truckers in Kansas, Nebraska, and Wyoming need to complete their IRP return by December 31.

In order to complete your IRP return, you need to provide your stamped Schedule 1. As you probably already know, you get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 by completing your HVUT Form 2290.

You can actually get your stamped Schedule 1 within 15 minutes of completing your HVUT Form 2290 by e-filing with ExpressTruckTax and e-filing with us is so easy that we can go over the instructions right here and now!

First, you create your free ExpressTruckTax account with your email address and personal password. Then you will enter your business name and EIN (Employer Identification Number). You need an EIN to complete your form and can apply for one with the IRS online.

Just keep in mind that it will take about 14 days to update in the IRS’s system and your form could get rejected during this time.

Get your stamped Schedule 1 within 15 minutes with ExpressTruckTax

Then you will enter tax year and first used month. The current tax year began on July 1, 2017, and will end on June 30, 2018. Your first used month is literally the first month that you use your truck on the road during the tax year.

Next, you will enter the vehicle information such as the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and taxable gross weight. This is also where you will enter if your vehicle was used for any special purposes, such as logging.

After that pay the IRS the amount of HVUT you owe through direct debit, EFTPS, check or money order. Then we will perform an internal audit check on your form to catch any basic errors and you can review your information.

Then once you’re ready, pay for your form and transmit it directly to the IRS! Soon you will receive your stamped Schedule 1 via email!

California Wildfire Relief Suspends Hours Of Service

The nation always needs truckers. You deliver essential goods like food and medicine across the nation.Without your hard work and determination, the economy could collapse. However, in certain times of emergency, we need you more than ever.

When the two major hurricanes Harvey and Irma hit the country with full force we desperately needed truckers to deliver relief items to those in need. We also needed truckers to haul debris away. Now with the wildfires ravaging southern California truckers are needed again.

California Wildfire Relief

Over 350 firefighters have been hard at work attempting to contain a wildfire raging across southern California. As of Wednesday night, the fire was about 5% contained and has ravaged over 60,000 acres in Ventura County and over 150 acres in Bel Air so far. The smoke from the fire can actually be seen from space.

Los Angeles is under threat due to this fire and thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate their homes so far. With the Santa Ana wind gusts between 70 to 80 mph spreading the fire there is no telling how far the fire will spread, even though firefighters are desperately trying to make progress towards controlling it.

Governor Jerry Brown has issued a state of emergency for Ventura County, which has suspended hours of service regulations for certain drivers. Those who aid in the relief effort by removing debris caused by the fire and those helping with the recovery effort will be able to operate under suspended hours of service.

Although, please note that if you’re helping with the recovery effort that there may be a few challenges to face. Evacuations are causing areas to fill with traffic that you will have to navigate through as people have to leave their homes.

Along with evacuations, there are a number of road closures making trucking routes extremely difficult. Parts of California Highway 150, California Highway 33, Freeway 405, and more are closed. Truckers trying to deliver their loads on time during the strict holiday season have been quite frustrated.

Be sure to have a map of the area available if you need to reroute and have your radio on to listen for evacuation notices. You will also want a backup, hand crank radio in the event of an emergency.

Other emergency items that will be good to have include extra water for yourself and to give out to those in need, along with nonperishable snacks. Take extra clothes, an extra phone battery, and safety tools.

Know that once you deliver a load to a relief area or go somewhere to pick up debris there might be a lot of waiting time involved. People may not know where they need to send you next. Also, don’t push your limits. Be safe and do not head into danger. You do not want to lose your rig or life in this fire.

Thank You For Helping

ExpressTruckTax would like to take a moment to thank you for all of your hard work. You make Christmas possible and take the time to deliver tons of important supplies all across the nation. You even step up to provide relief during times of emergency.

Please share your thoughts about the wildfire relief efforts in the comment section below and visit ExpressTruckTax for more trucking blogs.

Don’t Let Your HVUT 2290 Form Get Rejected

ExpressTruckTax knows you need an EIN to file Form 2290

Whenever your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is due you definitely want to get it in by the deadline to avoid penalties. However, part of making the deadline in time is correctly filing, so your form isn’t rejected.

If your Form 2290 is rejected it’s up to you to file corrections and resubmit it to the IRS by the deadline! If you wait too close to the deadline to file then you might not have time to correct it! So, let’s get your form accepted the first time around. Check out why Form 2290s get rejected so you can avoid making the same mistake.

Why Form 2290s Are Rejected

You Need An EIN To File

You are required to provide an EIN (Employer Identification Number) on your 2290 Form to complete it. An EIN is used to identify your business, so it’s different from your social security number (SSN), which is used to identify you as a person.

You can’t use your SSN in place of your EIN on your Form 2290 or it will instantly be rejected. If you do not have an EIN you can apply for one with the IRS online for free. Just keep in mind that when you apply you will instantly receive your EIN, but it takes at least 2 weeks to become updated in the IRS’s system and your form may get rejected during that time.

Your EIN Needs To Match

The IRS will be checking to see if your information on your Form 2290 matches what the IRS has on file. They will be taking an extra close look to make sure that your EIN matches your business name. If this information doesn’t match then your form could be rejected.

Before you file your Form 2290 you can call the IRS at 1-888-829-4933 to make sure your information matches what they have on file.

Duplicates Are Rejected

During each HVUT period, each VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) can only be filed for once. Make sure you carefully enter your VIN on your form so it’s error free. If it matches another VIN by mistake your form will be rejected. If you enter the incorrect VIN, don’t worry. You can quickly correct it for free with ExpressTruckTax.

Easily file and correct HVUT Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax

Also, make sure that you aren’t filing for the previous tax period because that would make your form a duplicate. The current HVUT tax period runs from July 1, 2017, to June 30, 2018.

The IRS Needs Their Money

Unfortunately, when filing Form 2290 you have to pay the amount of HVUT you owe to the IRS. When e-filing you can pay the IRS through direct debit or electronic funds withdrawal. In order to do so, you must provide your bank account number and routing transfer number (RTN).

If you enter these numbers incorrectly, with even just one number off, the IRS will not be able to retrieve funds from your account and your Form 2290 will be rejected. This information can be found on one of your checks.

Your form will also be rejected if your account doesn’t have enough funds to cover the amount you owe. If your form is rejected due to having the wrong RTN you can edit your form. If you have insufficient funds in your account you can choose a different payment method.

ExpressTruckTax Can Help

After quickly and easily e-filing your HVUT Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax, you will be notified via email if your form has been rejected. You can then use our step-by-step instructions to edit your form and retransmit it to the IRS as many times as necessary. Plus, our outstanding, US-based support team is also standing by to help.

Are You Joining Monday’s Anti-ELD Media Blitz?

Part of the appeal of being a trucker is the freedom of the open road. Unlike other professionals, truckers are one with their rigs without a boss breathing down their neck 24/7. Heck, most even say they were born free and chose to be a trucker.

ExpressTruckTax asks if you are going the anti-ELD protest

Now many feel that with the upcoming ELD mandate that the freedom that trucking provides will be trampled upon. It’s viewed as a major violation of trucker’s rights and many have taken steps to protest it with no results so far. However, now truckers all across the nation are taking to the streets for a major anti-ELD protest on Monday, December 4th.

Monday’s Anti-ELD Protest

In order to attract the public’s attention to their cause, many truckers are taking to the streets to raise awareness about the impending ELD mandate coming on December 18th. The protest will begin at 9 A.M. local time and over 40 locations are planning to participate so far.

To find out where the ELD protest will be near your state, head to the ‘Monday Information’ group on Facebook. Many truckers in the group are organizing protests in their state, providing more information, and are even helping each other out with protest signs and online flyers.

A few of the protest locations include Bill’s Truck Stop in Linwood, NC, Shoemakers Ambest Truck Stop in Lincoln NE, 116th N. 7th St, Richmond, VA, and many more. Simply post in the group to ask where you can find a rally near you.

This protest is a part of the major ELD media blitz that’s been occurring online for quite some time now. Many protesters have been on Twitter with the ELD or ME campaign to gain attention for their cause. Many tweets and memes have been directed at Trump.

ExpresstruckTax notes that the anti-ELD protest is family friendly
The December 4th anti-ELD protest is noted as a family-friendly event. Truckers are encouraged to bring their kids. Santa will even be making appearances at some of the locations and taking photos with rigs is encouraged.

The purpose of this is to educate people on the importance of truckers and so they can learn about the role in their lives. This will also give drivers a chance to share how they feel ELDs will negatively affect them.

This protest is also to support the H.R. 3283 ELD mandate delay bill introduced by Texas Representative, Brian Babin. If the bill was enacted it would give truckers two extra years to comply with the mandate by pushing the deadline back to December 19th.

Also, in attempt to stop or delay the mandate Brian Babin asked Trump halt the ELD mandate by executive order. He specifically asked for the mandate to be delayed until April 1, 2018, as that’s when the CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance) will begin enforcing their out-of-service criteria.

What Are Your Thoughts On The Anti-ELD Media Blitz?

We want your feedback. Will you be joining fellow truckers on December 4th to protest ELDs and over-regulation? Or do you think ELDs will financially benefit the trucking industry and make it a safer place? Please share your thoughts in the comment section below and visit ExpressTruckTax for more trucking blogs.

Is Your HVUT Form 2290 Due This Month?

ExpressTruckTax explains the HVUT Form 2290 Deadline

As a trucker, you probably know that you have truck taxes to pay. From IRP, IFTA, Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes, and more. You probably also already know that if you miss a deadline you will have hefty penalties to face.

Here at ExpressTruckTax, we don’t want you to get penalized and we understand that your HVUT 2290 deadline can be confusing since it’s based on your first used month. That’s why we’re here to clear things up with the proper HVUT Form 2290 facts. These facts will make you a truck tax expert like all of the incredibly skilled members on our support team.

HVUT 2290 Reminders

1. Your HUVT Form 2290 is due based on your first used month.

This ultimately means that your Form 2290 is due based on the month that you first use your truck. This is true for all drivers. They do not have to file Form 2290 until the last day of the month after the month that they first use their heavy vehicle on public highways.

For example, if you first use your truck in October then your Form 2290 is due by November 30. If you first use your truck in March then your Form 2290 is due by April 30. Therefore your 2290 can be due in a completely different month from when your friend’s is due.

It’s important to note that the deadline is based on the first used month during the tax period which runs from July 1 to June 30 of the following year. The current HVUT Form 2290 tax period began on July 1, 2017 and will end on June 30.

Because most truckers first use their heavy vehicles in July, the first month of the tax period, most HVUT Form 2290s are due on August 31.

2. You could save money based on your vehicle type.

It’s true, some vehicles are subject to lower tax rates than others depending on what you drive. The different vehicle types include:

E-filing Form 2290 is easy with ExpressTruckTax

Agricultural: These are highway motor vehicles that are used or expected to be used for farming purposes primarily. They must be registered as agricultural vehicles and count as suspended or credit vehicles when used for less than 7,500 miles during the tax period.

Logging: Logging vehicles are used exclusively for hauling timber from or around harvested forest sites. They have to be registered as logging vehicles with your state and are subject to lower tax rates.

Suspended Vehicles: Suspended vehicles are vehicles that are expected to travel less than 5,000 miles during the tax period. (7,500 for agricultural vehicles). They’re also known as credit vehicles. Other examples of credit vehicles include vehicles that were lost, stolen, sold, or destroyed.

3. E-Filing With ExpressTruckTax is Best

We have streamlined the e-filing process to be quick and simple, no matter what month your HVUT Form 2290 is due. Our step-by-step e-filing guide will help you instantly complete your form and transmit it directly to the IRS. Then within about 15 minutes, you’ll receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email.
