EIN Is REQUIRED to File Form 2290

If you are filing Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT), you must have an EIN to file the return. The IRS does not accept Social Security Numbers for the Form 2290. An EIN is an Employer Identification Number, also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, and can be used to verify a business entity.

If you do not have an EIN, you can apply for one online through the IRS website or if you don’t have the time or unable to get to a computer, you can have a service provider, like ExpressTruckTax Plus to do it for you.

NOTE: Remember, for vehicles first used in May, the due date to file your Form 2290 is June 30, 2013. While you can get your EIN immediately, it can take the IRS up to 10 business days to update new EINs into their system; so you will want to get your EIN today to ensure it is in the system by the deadline!

Once your EIN is in the IRS system or if you already have one, you can file your Form 2290 return and receive your Stamped Schedule 1 within minutes at ExpressTruckTax.

E-File Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicles First Used in September 2012

The HVUT, or the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is mandatory for vehicles to file the IRS Form 2290 after the first use month. The typical tax year for heavy vehicles begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th of the following year. For vehicles that are first used during the tax year, a prorated tax must be paid for the months that the vehicle was in use. This can be done with the IRS Form 2290 and the easiest way to e-file the 2290 is through ExpressTruckTax.com

When a new vehicle is placed in service, the Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the following month. The tax will be prorated based on the number of months the vehicle will have been used during the tax year. If a vehicle was used during any part of a month, the tax will be calculated for that month as a whole. For example, if a vehicle was used on September 28th (or any date during the month), it will be taxed as though it was used the entire month. So vehicles that were placed in service during the month of September will need to file HVUT using the 2290 by September 30, and the tax will be based on 10 months, instead of the full year.

All you will need is some basic business information, EIN, VIN and Gross Weight of the Vehicle to complete the return.  Then you will transmit the return to the IRS and you will receive your Stamped Schedule 1 in just minutes! How to Handle a Suspended Vehicle That is Destroyed

When you have a suspended vehicle that is destroyed at some point during the year, how do you report that to the IRS? Since there was no tax paid the previous year, you would not have to report the vehicle as being destroyed to the IRS.

If the vehicle had been sold or transferred, it would then need to be reported as a ‘Prior Year Suspended Vehicle’ that was sold/transferred.  You will need the name of the person/business you sold/transferred it to and the date.

If you have a taxable vehicle that was destroyed during the tax year, you would want to make sure that you report that vehicle as destroyed to the IRS for two reasons. First, if you do not report it as destroyed, the IRS will assume you owe the tax on it and you could risk a penalty for not filing.  The other reason is when you file it destroyed, you will be able to claim a refund for the months that you had previously paid for, but it was not used.
