Choosing a Form 2290 e-file provider can be difficult. With all the scams out there, we all have to be super careful with our information. But if you follow a few simple rules, you can make sure you’re e-filing safely and efficiently.
When looking for an e-file provider, the checklist below will help you make the right choice. Make sure your provider follows all the rules listed, and if they don’t, find another one that does.
Here’s the checklist your Form 2290 e-file provider should follow:
1. Is Your Form 2290 E-file Provider Authorized by the IRS?
First of all, your Form 2290 e-file provider should be IRS authorized. The easiest way to find out whether or not they’re authorized is to check the IRS list of 2290 Modernized e-File (MEF) Providers.
Here at ExpressTruckTax, we have an excellent relationship with the IRS. In fact, our programmers have years of experience building backend systems for them. And we still work closely with the IRS to make sure our software reflects the most current e-filing requirements.
2. How Do They Send Your Return to the IRS?
Next, you need to know how your e-file provider will send your return to the IRS. Do they mail it? Send it directly? How does it get from point A to point B for successful e-filing?
At ExpressTruckTax, we transmit your HVUT return electronically to the IRS for you. That way there are no long wait times for snail mail. The whole process is secure, and your return reaches the IRS in a matter of seconds.
3. How Do You Get Your Stamped Schedule 1?
Getting your Stamped 2290 Schedule 1 is important. You need a stamped Schedule 1 as your proof of filing so you can renew your heavy vehicle registration. So you need to know how your e-file provider will transmit this form to you. Will they mail it, or will they send it electronically?
With ExpressTruckTax, you will get your IRS watermarked 2290 Schedule 1 by e-mail as soon as the IRS accepts your return! Plus, we can fax it to you, send you a notification via text, and even email it to your carrier. And to top it all off, if you need a physical copy sent by mail, we can do that too!
Make sure your e-file provider has more than one option for you to receive your Stamped Schedule 1. They should be working for you and not the other way around.
4. Does Your 2290 E-file Provider Offer USA-Based Support?
You definitely want your e-file provider to offer US-Based support. Sometimes you need your questions answered immediately.
At ExpressTruckTax, our bilingual support team is legendary. They’re here all year round to help you. We don’t believe in “seasonal support,” we believe in having people who can answer your questions about HVUT from tax season to tax season.
And to make things even easier, we offer 24/7 emergency email support.

If your Form 2290 was rejected by the IRS, there’s always a good reason for it. And there’s a good chance it was for one of three very common reasons.
If your Form 2290 was rejected after you filed with ExpressTruckTax, we will send you an email detailing exactly why it was rejected and what you need to do.
You can address the issue and retransmit your Form 2290 as many times as your need until it is accepted by the IRS for no additional charge.
So that you know what to do in the event of IRS rejection, here are the three most common Form 2290 rejections:
Form 2290 E-file Error Code R0000-922
This Form 2290 error code R0000-922 means that the Business Name you entered does not match with the EIN listed in the IRS database.
Most of the time, this error occurs because a new Form 2290 filer applied for an EIN but that number hasn’t become active. It may take up to ten business days for a new EIN to become active.
How to fix it:
Make sure to check your EIN and Business Name to see if what you entered is correct. If you cannot find any errors in the information you have provided, you can contact the IRS at (800) 829-4933 and verify your EIN or Business Name. International users will need to call (267) 941-1099.
Here’s how you correct your EIN or Business Name:
1. Log in to your ExpressTruckTax account.
2. Edit your Business details using the pencil icon and provide the correct EIN or Business Name.
3. Identify the rejected return from the Dashboard.
4. Click on “Fix Errors & Resubmit” on the rejected return.
5. Click “Go to Review”. Check your return again and transmit it to the IRS.
If you do not have an EIN, you may contact ExpressTruckTax Plus at (803) 386-0320. You can also apply for an EIN online by visiting the IRS website (www.irs.gov) or over the phone by calling the IRS business hotline at (800) 829-4933. It may take up to ten business days for a new EIN to become active in the IRS e-file database.
Check the payment details you entered. Make sure you have the correct Bank Routing Number. This is a nine-digit code you can find on the bottom left of your check. You can re-enter this information and transmit your return to the IRS again.
Here’s how you can change your Bank Routing Number:
1. Log in to your ExpressTruckTax account.
2. Identify the rejected return from the Dashboard.
3. Click on “Fix Errors & Resubmit” on the rejected return.
4. You can now edit information in the IRS Tax Payment.
5. Enter your correct Bank Routing Number and transmit your return to the IRS.
E-file Error Code R0000-194
This Form 2290 error code R0000-194 means that the return is a duplicate of a previously accepted return. Typically, this is because either the EIN or VIN is incorrect.
Resolution:
Make sure you used the correct EIN, VIN, weight category, and first use month. Check to make sure you have the right tax year for your return.

Do You Need To File IFTA Fuel Tax?
If you operate in two or more jurisdictions, you must have an IFTA sticker and license.
IFTA reporting is necessary because, while state fuel tax would typically cover mileage traveled in a certain state, truckers frequently cross state borders. Therefore, where they purchase fuel isn’t always an accurate depiction of where they’re using it.
You’re required to participate in IFTA reporting if your vehicle has 2 axles and a gross vehicle weight or combined weight over 26,000 pounds, has 2 axles and a registered gross weight over 26,000 pounds or has 3 or more axles regardless of weight.
What Information Do You Need?
To complete your IFTA tax return, you’ll need the following information:
– Total miles traveled per jurisdiction
– Total gallons of fuel consumed per jurisdiction
– Total tax paid/gallons of fuel purchased per jurisdiction
– Current tax rate per jurisdiction
Calculating this information is easy with our free IFTA tax calculator.
All you have to do is select your base jurisdiction, choose the IFTA fuel tax quarter & fuel type, and enter miles traveled/fuel purchased for each state.
We’ll do the rest!
