Operation Safe Driver Week: What You Need To Know!

What is Operation Safe Driver Week?

Life moves by fast, but next week it might be a good idea to not drive like it does! July 11th-17th this year is the CVSA’s annual ‘Operation Safe Driver Week’ and the focus this year is on speeding, which has been the number one driver-related factor in fatal crashes on highways for years.

For those of you who are not familiar with the CVSA (Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance) or their annual week dedicated to driver’s safety, then this information might save you from an unwanted traffic stop!

From July 11-17, law enforcement officers will be on the lookout for any potentially dangerous driving behavior. Make sure that, during this week especially, you are extra cautious and aware of your speedometer. Although this won’t be the only thing police will be looking at to enforce, your speed will be high on their radar!

If any trucker is seen engaging in unsafe behaviors (speeding, distracted driving, etc.), they will be pulled over by law enforcement and may be issued a warning or a citation. During ‘Operation Safe Driver Week’ in 2020, police observed 66,421 drivers engaging in unsafe behaviors and issued 71,343 warnings/citations.

Why is This Week Important?

This annual program is only a week-long campaign and is supposed to decrease wrecks that are caused by unsafe driving behaviors.

According to the National Safety Council’s preliminary estimates, in 2020, traffic deaths increased by 24% over the previous year, even though the miles driven dropped by 13%. These statistics are based on all vehicles that used public roads, not just truckers. As a result of this, the CVSA took it upon themselves to educate as many drivers as they can, regardless of the size and amount of axles on a driver’s vehicle.

The CVSA is in partnership with the Federal Motor Safety Administration and to provide more resources during ‘Operation Safe Driver week’. They believe that the more educated all drivers are about road safety, the less wrecks that will occur. Be especially aware of your speed and partake in safe driving habits July 11th-17th.

How To Prepare Yourself for 2021-2022 HVUT Form 2290 Filing

The 2021-22 Form 2290 deadline is coming soon! You need to file before the deadline to avoid IRS HVUT penalties.

To file your Form 2290 quickly, you will need several pieces of information on hand. Be sure to gather the following items before e-filing your Form 2290 (unless you have already e-filed with ExpressTruckTax).

What you will need to file Form 2290

1. Business information

You will need to have the most accurate and up-to-date information about your business on hand. This includes the business type, business name, business address, and EIN.

2. Emploer Identification Number

Your Employer Identification Number (EIN) is like a Social Security Number (SSN) for your business. As a trucker, it is the only form of identification that the IRS accepts for Form 2290 filing

If you do not have one, you will need to apply for one. You can do that at this link, however, be aware that new EINs typically take 10+ business days to become active.

3. Vehicle Information

You will also need information about each one of the vehicles you are filing for. This includes First Used Month (FUM), Gross Taxable Weight, and VIN number.

Fortunately, if you are filing for lots of vehicles, we also have a bulk upload feature that makes this process simple.

4. First Used Month

Your vehicle’s First Used Month, is, obviously, the first month you began using the vehicle during the tax year. Your 2290 will be due at the end of the month following your FUM. So if you began using a truck in July, your 2290 will be due at the end of August.

If you are renewing a truck that you have been using for a year or more, the FUM will be July.

5. Taxable Gross Weight

The gross taxable weight of your vehicle is a sum of the following information:

1. The actual unloaded weight of a fully equipped vehicle.

2. The actual unloaded weight of any trailers or semi-trailers that is fully equipped and is generally used in combination with the vehicle.

3. The weight of the maximum load usually carried on the vehicle and the trailers or semi-trailers.

Learn more about gross taxable weight here.

6. Vehicle Identification Number

The Vehicle Identification Number on your truck serves as a unique identifier for your vehicle. It is important to get the VIN exactly correct on your 2290 because one of the most common reasons for the IRS to reject your 2290 is because of a duplicate VIN number filing.

Also, if your VIN is wrong, you will need to correct it for your stamped Schedule 1 to be accurate.

File your 2290 today!

The 2021-22 Form 2290 deadline is coming soon! It takes less than 5 minutes to file your 2290 if you have all your information on hand.

How To Fix IRS 2290 Rejections

So, you filed before the Form 2290 due date!

But you get a notice that your IRS 2290 was rejected.

Don’t stress. There are many reasons that the IRS rejects returns, and we’ve got a fix for each one. Here’s all the information you’ll need to correct your IRS 2290 highway use tax as quickly as possible to avoid penalties.

Form 2290 Rejection

Common Reasons for Rejection

In order to fix your 2290 highway use tax and get an updated Schedule 1 Form 2290, you’ll need to find the issue.

There are multiple reasons for Form 2290 rejection including:

1. EIN and Business Name Mismatch

If the EIN you entered does not match the information the IRS has on record, you can call the IRS Excise Hotline at 1-866-699-4096 to determine what information they have.

If your EIN is brand new, it will likely be rejected because it takes about 10 business days for the IRS to register a new EIN in their system. The reported reason for rejection will be: “EIN does not match business name”. Once your EIN is registered, simply retransmit your return.

2. Routing Transit Number Rejection

If you chose to pay your 2290 highway use tax by Electronic Funds Withdrawal, your bank routing number was required.

If your IRS 2290 was rejected because the wrong routing number was entered, simply correct the routing number and re-transmit your return to the IRS.

*Note: If you notice a routing number error but your return was accepted, contact the IRS.

3. Duplicate Filing of IRS 2290

This type of rejection means your IRS 2290 was already filed and confirmed by the IRS, and that a second 2290 was submitted on your behalf.
