How To Get Low Mileage Credits For Your HVUT

The 2020 Form 2290 HVUT tax must be paid on all commercial vehicles weighing 55,000 pounds or more that travel 5,000 miles or more (7,500 for agricultural vehicles).

But what happens if you paid your $550 HVUT tax last year and then didn’t drive more than 5,000 miles?

In that case, you will be eligible for a low mileage credit on your HVUT payment! It’s simple to claim a low mileage credit and apply it to this year’s HVUT payment! That way, you won’t owe a dime for the 2020 HVUT!

Keeping reading for more information and instructions for claiming your HVUT low mileage credit!

What is a low mileage credit?

If you own and operate a commercial vehicle, you must file a Form 2290 with the IRS every year. However, if you drive less than 5,000 miles (7,500 miles for agricultural vehicles), you do not have to pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT).

So, if you do not plan to drive more than 5,000 miles in a given year, you can report that truck as a “Suspended Vehicle”. You will not have to pay the HVUT for that year unless you end up driving more than 5,000 miles.

But what happens if you paid the HVUT but did not drive more than 5,000 miles? In that case, you can claim a low mileage tax credit. If accepted, your tax payment from last year will roll over to this year, so you won’t owe a dime in 2020!

How do I file for a Form 2290 low mileage credit?

  1. Log in to your ExpressTruckTax account.
  2. Click on the Form 8849 Schedule 6.
  3. Choose the ending month of your tax year.
  4. Skip the Sold/Destroyed vehicle section.

Has The Coronavirus Affected The Form 2290 Deadline for 2020-2021?

So, with so many deadlines being affected by the Coronavirus, has the 2020-2021 HVUT Form 2290 due date been affected yet?

Has the Form 2290 deadline changed for 2020-2021?

In a word, no. You still need to file your 2020-2021 Form 2290 by the typical August 31 deadline.

At this point, there is no reason to expect the HVUT deadline to change, because many states are already beginning the first stages of reopening from Coronavirus shutdowns.

How To Increase Your Trucking Client Base With DIY Marketing

Whether you are just getting your own authority or you are struggling to increase your current client base, you should consider using these no-nonsense, do-it-yourself marketing techniques.

These techniques come at little or no cost to you and they don’t require a marketing guru to implement.

With just a little elbow grease, these simple marketing strategies can help increase your brand awareness and trucking client base.

Marketing evaluation

Your first step to creating a trucking marketing strategy is to look at how your business compares to other trucking operations in your community. Also, consider your level of experience compared to theirs.

If you are a well-established trucking company with a solid reputation for delivering on time, capitalize on that fact! If you are just starting out, focus on what you excel at or what sets you apart from others, so clients can see more value from your services.

Work with other related trucking businesses within your area to cross-promote each other’s services. For instance, if you use a great factoring company, ask if they would be willing to mention you on their social media pages.

Think like a small business

It’s important to remember, especially if you just got your own authority, that you are a small business owner. You need a modern-looking website (these are surprisingly easy and cheap to create with websites like Squarespace.com and Wix.com).

You need at least one business social media account for your business (Facebook is usually best). And most importantly, you need to pay attention to how people are responding to your online presence.

Find your niche

Don’t just haul groceries or construction equipment because that’s what your buddy does. Do some research and figure out what is in demand and use social media and your website to show how you are a perfect match for that part of the trucking industry.

Client relations

Join your state trucking association and start networking with other companies in the trucking industry.

Make sure that you are mentioning your clients on your social media accounts. Let them know if you had a good experience. Show other potential clients that you are polite and engaged. No one wants to do business with someone who comes off as grumpy.

Mobile marketing

If you haven’t already, be sure to get your logo on your truck and trailers if possible. This is an easy way to raise brand awareness while you are simply driving around.

According to Fleet Owner, marketing on your truck and trailer is more effective than almost any other form of marketing for truckers.

However, this one isn’t really DIY.

The best option is to have your truck professionally wrapped with a graphic of your logo and phone number. It will look much better this way.

Your name and number must be large enough so people can see while driving and must be branded so it can be recognized on your website and social media.

Join local charities

Become a Toys-For-Tots drop-off location during the holiday season. Alternatively, get involved with local toy drives or charities. You will be seen doing good within your community, and your name will be noticed every time someone donates a toy to a child in need.

Get DAT with TruckLogics

With new DAT load board integration from TruckLogics, you can post your truck availability so that clients can start contacting you, instead of the other way around.

You can set the dates that you are available and even where you would like to run!

Get a 15-day free trial of TruckLogics! There’s no obligation and credit card information required.

Pay Your HVUT Your Way On Your Time

You’ve taken the time to e file, before the start of the 2020 Form 2290 tax season, now you are wondering what comes next. We have worked alongside the IRS for years to ensure you always come out on top. ExpressTruckTax allows you to pay your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, also known as HVUT 2020, the way you want. It’s your money, so who are we to tell you how to use it?

Payments We Accept

ExpressTruckTax accepts HVUT 2020 payments via credit card, debit card, direct debit, electronic funds withdrawal (EFW), Electronic Federal Tax Payment System – EFTPS online, or by check/money order. Making your IRS 2290 payment is easy with ExpressTruckTax. There are options for your IRS 2290 payment that aren’t offered everywhere, so having us in your corner this year is the correct way to e file 2290.

Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW)

When you use this method you are authorizing the IRS to debit your owed amount from your account. This method requires you to provide your bank account number and routing.

It is important to double-check the account information to avoid possible penalties for late payment. The IRS typically debits accounts within 24-48 hours, so double-check the amount in your account to avoid your payment being declined.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)

ExpressTruckTax clients can pay 2290 online with the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). EFTPS online is a system of paying federal taxes electronically using the Internet or phone. EFTPS online allows users to schedule payments, in advance. When this method is selected you will automatically be directed to the EFTPS online website. It can take up to 10 business days to create an account, so for those choosing to wait until the last minute this method may not be the best idea.

Check or Money Order

If choosing to make an IRS 2290 payment with a check or money order there is a certain procedure you will have to follow and pay close attention to.    We’ve listed the steps for your HVUT 2020 convenience:

  • Make your check or money order payable to the United States Treasury. Write your name, address, EIN, ‘IRS Form 2290’, and date (as entered in box 3) on your payment.
  • Detach your 2290-V and send it with your payment. If you filed electronically, do not submit your Form 2290 or stamped Schedule 1 with your payment voucher. (*Do not staple your payment voucher, payment, or Form 2290 together.)

Send your payment and the 2290-V voucher to: Internal Revenue Service,
P.O. Box 804525,
Cincinnati, OH 45280-4525

We Got You Covered

Whether you choose to make an online payment for your HVUT 2020 using EFTPS online, pay 2290 with credit card or debit card, go the direct debit route, try the Electronic Funds Withdrawal payment method, or choose the classic check or money order method, ExpressTruckTax has you covered.

When you choose to file your 2020 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form, HVUT 2020, before July 1st you make the wisest decision for your time and money. Our goal is to save you money and support you while you do what you love. The half-million clients that file with ExpressTruckTax can tell you just how much we put you and your family’s needs high on our priority list.

What You Need To Know About The Emergency IRP And IFTA Deadline Changes

Last week, the FMCSA temporarily suspended HOS rules for truckers hauling essential supplies and providing direct assistance to relief efforts for the Coronavirus.

Now, as more and more people are working from home in an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19, many government offices like the DMV are shutting down.

So many states have no way of verifying or keeping track of trucking registration like IFTA and IRP and truckers have no way of renewing their licenses.

To ease this tension in the midst of the COVID-19 outbreak, many states are waiving or suspending some or all of the registration requirements for IFTA and IRP.

This does not mean that all regulations are null and void, however. Most states have also asked that you carry a copy of a waiver (most of which are linked below) with you while you travel in their borders.

What You Need To Know About The New IRS Form 7200

Because of the havoc COVID-19 is creating for the US economy (and the rest of the world), the federal government has taken a number of steps to help curb its economic impact in 2020.

This began with a number of registration exemptions and HOS exemptions for truckers and pushing the 2020 IRS tax deadline back to July 15th.

Then, on March 31, the CARES Act was passed. This extended a number of relief programs to small businesses with over $2 trillion in stimulus money.
