Still unsure if you want to e-file Form 2290 for 2016-2017? We put together a list of the 8 steps required to e-file (and therefore get your stamped Schedule 1).

Trust us, you want to follow these steps and e-file before the Form 2290 due date passes. I mean, you don’t want to get hit with penalties, do you?

Step 1: Sign in / Create Your Account

First of all, creating an account is always free! We never charge you to create your account, and you don’t have to pay until you transmit your return. We’ll even let you create sub-accounts for employees, accountants, or anybody else

Step 2: Enter Your Business Information

At this point, you need to enter your business information. This includes your name and your Employer Information Number (EIN), which you need to make sure you know.

Step 3: Choose Your Tax Year and First Used Month

At step 3, you enter your tax year and first used month for the vehicle(s) you are filing for.

The tax year you’ll be filing for (for this deadline) will be 2016-2017!

Step 4: Enter Your Vehicle Information

After that, you need to enter your vehicle identification number (VIN) and the taxable gross weight of the vehicle(s) you are filing for.

If you need to, you can select if your vehicle is used for any special purposes, such as for agricultural use or logging.

Note: Logging doesn’t mean you use e-logs or any other type of mileage logging system.

Step 5: IRS Payment Options

There are several payment options for you to select when you e-file IRS HVUT Form 2290. We suggest that you make sure you’re familiar with the IRS payment options available, including:

  • Direct Debit or Electronic Funds Withdrawal
  • Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS)
  • Check or Money Order

Step 6: Summary and Audit Check

Before we transmit your 2290, we’ll check over your form to make sure it’s clear of any basic filing errors.

We can’t guarantee that you won’t be audited, but we can do our best to make sure nothing looks funky before we transmit!

Step 7: Transmit Your Return to the IRS

At this point, your return is ready to be transmitted to the IRS. Simply add your electronic signature and voila! We can transmit, and you’re done with Form 2290 Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return for the year!

Step 8: Receive Your Stamped Schedule 1

Want to know the best part? Shortly after you file, you’ll get your 2290 Schedule 1. That’s not bad!

4 HVUT Errors You’ve Already Made

Sure, Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes aren’t due until August, but do you know the most common errors?

While we have audit and error checks built into ExpressTruckTax, there are always a some user-end errors you need to watch out for.

The last thing you want is for one to slip by the cracks and go unnoticed until it’s too late!

Hopefully you haven’t made any of these, but we will do our best to guide you through these troubled waters.

Your VIN Was Mistyped

Honestly, this is one of the most common errors we hear about. With vehicle identification numbers being a 17-digit string of characters, who can be blamed?

Since these codes are frequently entered wrong, we know that plenty of truckers have to deal with this.

Now, really this is between you and the IRS, because you might file with the wrong VIN and never know. Yeah, that’ll be bad if you need to present your schedule 1 to some aspect of the law.

And don’t forget, your VIN numbers will never contain an O, I, or Q, unless the truck is over 20 years old.

So if you entered the wrong VIN and filed with ExpressTruckTax, log back in and get a free VIN correction. If you didn’t file with us, you can still file for a VIN correction after paying a small fee.

You Are Paper Filing… Because It’s the Stone Age

Sorry, we kid. We are a little gung-ho about e-filing, so we like to rag on paper every now and then.

But really, paper filing puts you and your trucking profession in unnecessary danger. The error rate on typical paper filing sits around 21%, while e-filing is less than 1%.

What other reasons should you e-file? I dunno, you hate doing paperwork by hand, and you’re not a mathematician. That counts for us, at least.

Plus you will get your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes.

You Don’t Need a New 2290, You Paid on Your Old Truck

Oh yeah, you paid. For your last truck, not your new one!

Just because you have 2290s for your old vehicle, doesn’t mean you’re set on your new one. The IRS does not believe in a 1-1 truck transference, so you can’t either.

That means you need to register your new truck like you would your old one, except you e-file your 2290 based on the first month you use it.

Speaking of First Month

If you bought your truck this year, you will have a first used month unique to the purchase at a prorated amount.

Basically, you’re only charged from the first month you use the truck instead of your typical July/August filing date.

Since August is the deadline, you will still have to pay that deadline, even if you bought your truck in May or June.

Don’t make this common mistake! And if you did, it’s better to file late than never.

And One More, as a Bonus…

You’re not e-filing with ExpressTruckTax! With our built-in error checks, easy to use e-filing system, and Truck Zone business center, you have plenty of reasons to e-file with us.

Plus you get your stamped Schedule 1 in minutes, so you can get back on the road in no time.

If you have any questions, give us a call at 704.234.6005. Or shoot us an email at Support@ExpressTruckTax.com.

Are YOU making these 2290 errors?

The Countdown is On: Getting Your EIN

The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax season is drawing to a close, Trucking Nation! There’s only a few more days before the deadline and you need to have all your trucks in a row so you can e-file with ease.

The first thing you need in order to e-file your HVUT is your EIN. EIN stands for for Employer Identification Number and it is imperative that you have one before you file.

With only 4 days left to get your 2290s e-filed, it is past time to register for an EIN. Especially since it takes the IRS up to 10 business days for your EIN to become active. Before that your EIN will be rejected by any e-filing system and you will be unable to submit your Form 2290.

While there isn’t enough time for you to get your EIN and still e-file on time, you need to request one right away. Because no matter what you need to e-file! And the sooner you request one, the smaller the penalties.

In order to request your EIN, you can do it one of three ways.

  • You can go directly to the IRS website and request your EIN online
  • You can or call their EIN hotline at 1.800.829.4933, and request your EIN over the phone.
  • Or you can request your EIN through fax or postal mail.

If you don’t have time to get you EIN, or none of those options appeal to you. We have people who can take the reins and do it for you. Not to mention, they’re secure and affordable!

With our friends at ExpressTruckTax Plus, you can get your EIN without ever having to lift a finger. Since they specialize in permits, registrations, and helping truckers e-file for just about anything. Just give them a call at 803.386.0320 or email them at ettplus@expresstrucktax.com to get started.

If you’ve misplaced your EIN, we can help with that as well!

  1. If you’ve e-filed with us before, your EIN is stored in your account! Just login and view your business details, or a previously filed return and voila, you have your EIN.
  2. If you haven’t e-filed with us before, you can check with the bank or local/state institution you’ve applied for a license with. Both should have your EIN on record.
  3. Or you can always call the IRS hotline at 1.800.829.4933, and they’ll give you the EIN directly over the phone after verifying your identity.

But whatever you do, don’t wait! You need to request your EIN right away and before it’s too late for you to e-file on time. Don’t pay the IRS more than you have to!

If you need any help with the EIN or e-filing your 2290s, then our dedicated support legends are here for you. Just give them a call at 704.234.6005 or send them an email at support@expresstrucktax.com for 24/hour support in English and Spanish. And they’ll help you e-file in a flash!

How to E-file Safely & Securely

When doing your taxes, security should be the first thing on your mind. And while ExpressTruckTax offers a safe, secure solution in order to e-file your taxes, you should be sure to go the extra mile to keep your own information secure.

ExpressTruckTax is and always will be secure, but to make sure you’re using our product to it’s fullest, here are some tips and tricks on how to be safe when e-filing.

Never Share Your Password

As a general rule of the internet, you shouldn’t share your password to anything with anyone. Giving someone access to private, personal information about your truck, your finances, and your taxes is a big no-no. So you should always keep your password to yourself.

If you need help, or have someone to file for you, make certain it’s someone you trust. Even then, your password should be your own. That’s why we have CPA accounts, so if you have an accountant who files for you, they can do so from their account

Never download files from unknown sources

If you don’t know the source, don’t download it! Downloading things from unknown sources puts you at risk. No matter what it is! Always make sure you’re on the right website, or you could risk getting a malware infection, and nobody wants that.

Since ExpressTruckTax uses secure servers and are McAfee Hackerproof, there’s never a risk when you e-file with us. And downloading documents from our website is secure too! So you never have to worry about a thing.

Reach our tax experts for instant assistance

If you need any assistance, or you’re having trouble with anything related to e-filing with us, we’ve got support! Our dedicated support team is here all year long to help you access files, access your account, and get ready for the new tax season. All you have to do is give them a call!

Staying safe online isn’t always easy, but with ExpressTruckTax, we promise to protect your information on our secure, hacker-proof servers. More info here.

If you need any help with the e-filing process, our dedicated support legends are here for you. All you have to do is give them a call at 704.234.6005 or send them an email at support@expresstrucktax.com for 24/hour support in English and Spanish.

The Countdown is On: How to E-file for Farmers

It’s harvest time, Trucking Nation! And for more than just for crops. Your Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes are due on your agricultural vehicle by the end of the month.

So get ready to renew your tags, farmers! Because keeping your tags up-to-date and filing your HVUT on time is a great way to stay in the good graces of the IRS. And you need to file your 2290’s so you’ll able to renew your vehicle registration on time, or you could face serious consequences and penalties.

Filing for suspended, logging, or agricultural vehicles is a little bit different than filing for a taxable vehicle. Because Agricultural Vehicles get a larger allotment of mileage before they are considered taxable and not suspended vehicles. For example, regular taxable vehicles have a 5,000 mile limit before they are no longer considered suspended, while agricultural vehicles have a 7,500 mile limit.

While the difference in how you file isn’t anything extreme, we’ve got a handy dandy guide to show you how to file specifically for agricultural vehicles.
How to File for Agricultural Vehicles

When e-filing for agricultural vehicles, simply follow the same three easy steps as usual, but with a slight twist when entering your vehicle information.

Step 1: Account Setup

  • If you already have an account with us, all you have to do is login.
  • However, if you’ve never created an account with us before, then go ahead and select “Create Account,” and then enter your email address and a password of your choosing to get started.
    • Pro-tip #1: To save time, you can also choose to login with your Google Account, or Facebook Account.
  • Next, enter your business details. Including your EIN, business name, and signing authority.
  • Select “File for Current Tax Year,” and then finally, click “Next” to move on to vehicle details.

Step 2: Vehicle Details

  • This is where you all all of your vehicle information. If you’re a returning user, chances are you have some vehicles saved in Truck Zone.
  • But if you’re a new user, you have some choices on how to upload your new vehicle information. You can enter the vehicles one-by-one manually, or you can use an excel file.
  • Remember to choose the right section for your vehicle. Since you are using agricultural and farming equipment, your vehicle may be classified under suspended if you’re under 7,500 miles for the tax year.

  • If this is the case, skip the taxable vehicle section and choose to add your vehicle under suspended instead.
  • If your vehicle has gone over the mileage limit, simply add your truck under “Taxable Vehicles” and move on to the next step.

Step 3: Transmit

    • Next, review your details and make certain everything is correct. Our system will also review your information for you, just in case.
    • And finally, you can securely transmit your return to the IRS, and get your Stamped Schedule 1 back via email in minutes.

That’s it! It really is that simple. Three tiny steps that are imperative for staying compliant and renewing your vehicle registration come tax season.

If you need any help along the way, just ask our dedicated support legends! You can give them a call at 704.234.6005 during our new extended business hours from 8AM to 8PM EST, or you can shoot them an email at support@expresstrucktax.com for 24/hour support in English and Spanish.

The Countdown is On: Form 2290 Bootcamp

We interrupt your regularly scheduled #TruckTechTuesday, to bring you 2290 bootcamp!

We know you must have questions, and we’ve got the answers. Here’s everything you’ve ever wondered about HVUT, broken down into one easy read. Because that’s what ExpressTruckTax is all about, making things easier for the trucking industry!

    What is Form 2290?

IRS Form 2290 with Schedule 1 is a tax form that must be filed each year for all taxable highway vehicles that are registered, or required to be registered in your name under state, District of Columbia, Canadian, or Mexican law.

That means if you own a heavy vehicle, a vehicle that has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, or have one registered in your name in the US, District of Columbia, Canada, or Mexico, you need to file Form 2290 and pay the excise tax every year!

    When to File

You need to file your 2290 every year beginning in July. The regular HVUT tax year begins on July 1 and ends the following June. But tax for the year is due during the renewal period, which is typically from July 1st to August 31st of each year, giving you two whole months to e-file.

However, if you purchase a new vehicle during the tax year, then your HVUT is due the month after you purchase a new vehicle. Meaning if you purchased your vehicle in August, your HVUT would be due September 31.

    When Is the Deadline?

The 2290 deadline to file for renewals is on August 31, every year. This means you now have less than a month to e-file! However, if you purchased your vehicle later during the tax year, your first-used month and your tax due date will be different.

You have a month to file after you purchase your new vehicle, for example, if you purchase your vehicle in October, your taxes are due at the end of November or you will face penalties.

However, it is better to e-file right away. That way you can have your taxes filed and out of the way until the next tax year, and you don’t have to worry about missing any deadlines and getting penalized for it.

When Do I Need to Renew?

You need to renew your HVUT every year during the renewal period. If you wait to file, you risk facing some pretty hefty penalties for not filing. That and you can’t renew your vehicle registration with the DMV.

    Is This a State Tax?

No, unlike IFTA, HVUT it is a federally-mandated tax. As stated previously, if you have a heavy vehicle registered, or required to be registered in your name in North America, and Mexico, you are required to file yearly Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes.

If you have any more questions about the 2290 and how to file, our dedicated support legends are here for you! So give us a call at 704.234.6005 during our new extended business hours from 8AM to 8PM EST. Or you can send them an email at support@expresstrucktax.com for 24/hour support in English and Spanish.
