IRS To Be Closed Tomorrow, May 24th

The IRS will be closed on tomorrow May 24th, as well as June 14, July 5, July 22 and Aug. 30, 2013 due to the current budget situation. Filing and payment deadlines will NOT be affected, so you will want to take these dates into account as advised by the IRS:

  • Due to the current budget situation, including the sequester, all IRS operations will be closed on those days. This means that all IRS offices, including all toll-free hotlines, the Taxpayer Advocate Service and the agency’s nearly 400 taxpayer assistance centers nationwide, will be closed on those days. IRS employees will be furloughed without pay. No tax returns will be processed and no compliance-related activities will take place.
  • The IRS noted that taxpayers should continue to file their returns and pay any taxes due as usual.
  • Taxpayers needing to contact the IRS about their returns or payments should be sure to take these furlough dates into account. In some instances, this may include taxpayers with returns or payments due soon after a furlough day, such as the June 17 deadline for taxpayers abroad and those making a second-quarter estimated tax payment as well as the Sept. 3 deadline for truckers filing a highway use tax return.

For full details see the IRS notice.

E-File Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicles First Used in September 2012

The HVUT, or the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is mandatory for vehicles to file the IRS Form 2290 after the first use month. The typical tax year for heavy vehicles begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th of the following year. For vehicles that are first used during the tax year, a prorated tax must be paid for the months that the vehicle was in use. This can be done with the IRS Form 2290 and the easiest way to e-file the 2290 is through ExpressTruckTax.com

When a new vehicle is placed in service, the Form 2290 must be filed by the last day of the following month. The tax will be prorated based on the number of months the vehicle will have been used during the tax year. If a vehicle was used during any part of a month, the tax will be calculated for that month as a whole. For example, if a vehicle was used on September 28th (or any date during the month), it will be taxed as though it was used the entire month. So vehicles that were placed in service during the month of September will need to file HVUT using the 2290 by September 30, and the tax will be based on 10 months, instead of the full year.

All you will need is some basic business information, EIN, VIN and Gross Weight of the Vehicle to complete the return.  Then you will transmit the return to the IRS and you will receive your Stamped Schedule 1 in just minutes! If you need assistance or have any questions, please contact us our US based customer support team in Rock Hill, SC at 704-234-6005 or email us at support@ExpressTruckTax.com.

Form 2290 Suspended Vehicles

We here at ExpressTruckTax.com are frequently asked why they have to file a Form 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Return if they only have a vehicle that is considered suspended.  If a highway motor vehicle does not exceed mileage 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles) it is considered suspended and is exempt from tax.

Mileage use limit means the use of a vehicle on public highways 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles). The mileage use limit applies to the total mileage a vehicle is used during a period, regardless of the number of owners.

An agricultural vehicle is any highway motor vehicle that is:

  • 1. Used (or expected to be used) primarily for farming purposes, and
  • 2. Registered (under state laws) as a highway motor vehicle used for farming purposes for the entire period. A special tag or license plate identifying the vehicle as used for farming is not required for it to be considered an agricultural vehicle.

So why would do you have to file?  In order to obtain your registration and/or tags, state require and Stamped Schedule 1 from the IRS for all vehicles 55,000 lbs or more.  You must file Form 2290 in order to receive your Stamped Schedule 1.

At ExpressTruckTax.com, you can file your Form 2290 and receive your Stamped Schedule 1 within minutes. Friday is the deadline so to E-File the Form 2290 online now, go to ExpressTruckTax.com. The entire process only takes a few minutes, including getting your Schedule 1 back. When you E-File you avoid all of that and once you create your account and file your return, it is even easier for future years, because you will not have to reenter all the information; it will already be in the system.
It is your responsibility to know when and if you have to file. You must file Form 2290 and Schedule 1 for the tax period beginning on July 1, 2012, and ending on June 30, 2013, if a taxable highway motor vehicle (defined below) is registered, or required to be registered, in your name under state, District of Columbia, Canadian, or Mexican law at the time of its first use during the period and the vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more.
