FAQ Friday: Why did the IRS reject my Form 2290?

What is Form 2290?

How can ExpressTruckTax help file Form 2290?

ExpressTruckTax is a leading form 2290 e-file provider that allows drivers to file Form 2290 stress-free. The entire process takes only a few minutes. You simply enter your business details including your EIN (Employer Identification Number), your vehicle information including your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), any credit vehicles if you are claiming any, and your payment information. Once this is all entered and submitted, you will receive your Stamped Schedule 1 as soon as the IRS accepts your Form 2290.

Can the IRS reject Form 2290?

Yes, the IRS can reject Form 2290 for a number of reasons. Don’t worry though, even if your Form gets rejected, you are able to resubmit it at no additional cost using ExpressTruckTax.

A Newly Created EIN

If you file Form 2290 with an EIN that has just been created there is a good chance your form will be rejected by the IRS. This is because it typically takes about 10-15 days for an EIN to be active in the IRS e-filing system. At no extra cost to you, you are able to transmit the form once a day until the IRS accepts it.

Wrong Business Name

Entering the wrong business name on Form 2290 is another reason it can get rejected. The business name needs to match the one registered with that EIN. If it does not match the only way to fix this mistake is to file a new Form 2290 with the correct business name.

Wrong Routing Number when you choose to pay with EFW (Electronic Funds Withdrawal)

When filing Form 2290 and selecting EFW (Electronic Funds Withdrawal) it is important to make sure both your routing and account numbers are correct. If you enter the wrong routing number on your Form 2290 it will be rejected immediately. The only way to correct this is to file a new Form 2290.

Don’t Wait! Why You Should File Your Form 2290 Now And Not Later

August is only a few days away, which means the Form 2290 deadline is only a month away!

You may be thinking that a month is more than enough time to file and pay your tax return, but why risk it? No one wants to deal with penalties and additional charges.

Although e-filing your Form 2290 can be a relatively quick process for some, that may not always be the case. One simple mistake could cause the return to be rejected by the IRS, and if you didn’t file ahead of time, it may delay the processing long enough to have to face these unwanted penalties.

As Long As I File Before The Due Date, I Won’t Have Penalties?

Maybe, Maybe not.

If your information is correct and your HVUT payment goes through, then yes. But, if the form is rejected or the payment isn’t able to be withdrawn in time, then you will still face penalties.

So is waiting until the last minute really worth that risk?

What Will Cause My Form 2290 To Be Rejected?

There could be many reasons why your Form 2290 could end up rejected. Some of the most common errors found on Form 2290s include inputting an incorrect Routing Transmit number, an EIN and Business name that do not match, and already having a duplicate accepted return.

If the IRS does reject your form, ExpressTruckTax will send you an email explaining why the Form was not accepted. This email will also explain the exact step-by-step process on how to fix the error.

Once you address and correct the error, ExpressTruckTax allows you to resubmit your IRS Form 2290 as many times as needed until it is accepted, at no additional charge.

What Penalties Will You Face If Your Form 2290 Isn’t Processed And Paid Before The Deadline?

No one wants to pay penalties with their hard-earned money, especially when these fines could have easily been avoided.

If your Form 2290 is not processed by the IRS, and they do not receive your payment on time, be prepared to find yourself face-to-face with high penalties and interests.

Late Form 2290 Penalties and Interest

  • You will receive a penalty of 4.5% of the total tax amount due. This will be assessed monthly for up to 5 months if the Form 2290 is not filed within the given deadline.
  • If your HVUT was underpaid, a monthly penalty of .5% will be charged from the total tax due as a result of the underpayment.
  • An additional interest charge of .54% will be accrued per month.

If your Form 2290 or payment is late, the IRS will send you a letter to notify you about the return and the penalties.

How To Fix IRS 2290 Rejections

So, you filed before the Form 2290 due date!

But you get a notice that your IRS 2290 was rejected.

Don’t stress. There are many reasons that the IRS rejects returns, and we’ve got a fix for each one. Here’s all the information you’ll need to correct your IRS 2290 highway use tax as quickly as possible to avoid penalties.

Form 2290 Rejection

Common Reasons for Rejection

In order to fix your 2290 highway use tax and get an updated Schedule 1 Form 2290, you’ll need to find the issue.

There are multiple reasons for Form 2290 rejection including:

1. EIN and Business Name Mismatch

If the EIN you entered does not match the information the IRS has on record, you can call the IRS Excise Hotline at 1-866-699-4096 to determine what information they have.

If your EIN is brand new, it will likely be rejected because it takes about 10 business days for the IRS to register a new EIN in their system. The reported reason for rejection will be: “EIN does not match business name”. Once your EIN is registered, simply retransmit your return.

2. Routing Transit Number Rejection

If you chose to pay your 2290 highway use tax by Electronic Funds Withdrawal, your bank routing number was required.

If your IRS 2290 was rejected because the wrong routing number was entered, simply correct the routing number and re-transmit your return to the IRS.

*Note: If you notice a routing number error but your return was accepted, contact the IRS.

3. Duplicate Filing of IRS 2290

This type of rejection means your IRS 2290 was already filed and confirmed by the IRS, and that a second 2290 was submitted on your behalf.
