As a trucker, time is everything. Between long hauls, tight delivery windows, and DOT regulations, the last thing you need is to stop your momentum to file taxes. Fortunately, with today’s mobile technology, staying compliant with IRS regulations has never been easier or faster.

Filing IRS Form 2290, the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT), is a required step for operating vehicles over 55,000 lbs on public highways. But traditionally, this meant paperwork, long waits at tax offices, or being tied to a desktop computer. Now, that process fits in your pocket.

Why It Matters:

  • Filing from your phone gives you flexibility and speed, whether you’re at a rest stop, truck wash, or waiting on a load, you can handle your HVUT filing in just minutes.
  • Avoid penalties and DMV delays, even if you’re away from home base. Filing on time ensures you’ll get your IRS-stamped Schedule 1, which is required for truck registration or renewal.
  • Stay compliant while staying mobile. No more lost paperwork, missed deadlines, or scrambling to find a computer.
  • The ExpressTruckTax mobile app makes it all possible, offering an IRS-authorized, secure, and easy-to-use filing solution designed specifically for truckers.

If you’re always on the road, this app puts the power of fast, accurate filing right in the palm of your hand. In this guide, we’ll walk you through exactly how to file Form 2290 from your phone in just a few simple steps.

Can You Really File Form 2290 from Your Phone?

Yes, as long as you’re using the right tool, you can file IRS Form 2290 entirely from your phone in just minutes. With the right mobile app, there’s no need for paperwork, printers, or computer access. You can manage the entire HVUT filing process, from entering vehicle details to receiving your stamped Schedule 1, right from the cab of your truck, a truck stop lounge, or anywhere you’ve got a phone signal.

The ExpressTruckTax mobile app is specifically designed for truckers, fleet owners, and owner-operators who want the freedom to file on the go. It’s IRS-authorized, user-friendly, and packed with features that make mobile tax filing fast, accurate, and secure.

What You’ll Need to Get Started:

To successfully file Form 2290 from your phone, make sure you have the following:

  • Internet Access: A stable cellular or Wi-Fi connection is required to securely transmit your return to the IRS and receive your stamped Schedule 1.
  • Employer Identification Number (EIN): The IRS does not accept Social Security Numbers (SSNs) for 2290 filings. You’ll need an active EIN registered at least 2 weeks prior to filing, or your return may be rejected.
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN): Make sure the VIN is entered accurately, typos or internal fleet numbers can delay your filing. ExpressTruckTax includes a free VIN checker to help avoid common mistakes.
  • Taxable Gross Weight of the Vehicle: This determines the HVUT amount due. You’ll select the correct weight category when entering your vehicle details.
  • First Used Month of the Vehicle: The IRS calculates your tax based on the month your vehicle was first used on public highways during the tax year (July 1 – June 30). This determines whether you owe the full tax or a prorated amount.
  • IRS Payment Method: Choose how you want to pay the IRS:
    • EFTPS (Electronic Federal Tax Payment System)
    • Electronic Funds Withdrawal (direct debit)
    • Credit or debit card
    • Check or money order

With these basics on hand and the ExpressTruckTax app on your device, you’re ready to file from the road, quickly, securely, and without the hassle of stopping at an office or logging into a desktop.

Calculate the Tax Due for IRS Form 2290

The IRS Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes can be used to determine the amount of Excise Taxes needs to be paid to the IRS in order for the Heavy Vehicle to receive a Stamped Schedule 1. Although it can be complicated to file this return, ExpressTruckTax.com has made it much easier. The Form 2290 can be filed online through the secure E-Filing System that Express Truck Tax has created.
This Excise Tax must be filed annually for any vehicle over 55,000 pounds that operates on public roads. The tax amount can vary depending on the number of months the vehicle was in service during the tax period and it is also determined by the gross vehicle weight. This Taxable Gross Weight is calculated by using the total weight of the vehicle fully equipped for service.
Here is a Payment Table for Heavy Vehicles and logging vehicles as determined by the taxable gross weight of the vehicle.

As you can see from the graph, this only applies to vehicles operating on public roads that weigh at least 55,000 pounds. The taxable gross weight of a vehicle is determined by adding the following:
The actual unloaded weight of the vehicle, when it is fully equipped for service.
The actual unloaded weight of any trailers or semitrailers fully equipped for service normally used in addition to the vehicle.
The weight of the maximum load that can be carried on the vehicle and on any trailers or semitrailers typically used with the vehicle.
For Buses, The taxable gross weight is its actual unloaded weight fully equipped for service in addition to 150 pounds for each seat provided for passengers and driver.
Vehicle that drive less than 5,000 miles throughout the year would be considered a suspended vehicle, and there would be no tax due Tax Suspended Vehicles, also known as low mileage or category W vehicles are not subject to taxation because these vehicles will remain below the mileage threshold of 5,000 miles during the tax period (or 7,500 miles, if Agricultural use).

Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax-IRS Form 2290 – Stamped Schedule 1

Even though there is not a way to e-file Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes through the IRS website, the IRS has authorized Express Truck Tax to file this return because they have passed the IRS Assurance Testing System (ATS) and/or Business Acceptance Testing (BATS) requirements for Software Developers of electronic business returns to the IRS. An IRS Form 2290 is not complete unless the Schedule 1 has officially been stamped by the Internal Revenue Service. The Form 2290 handles Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes, and the Schedule 1 is part of the IRS Form. To ensure that this is handled properly so that all Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes are reported and paid, there are several options. This form can be mailed, taken to the IRS directly, or the most efficient method: e-filing.
If you choose to mail the form to the IRS, it can take weeks for the IRS to respond with the official Stamped Schedule 1 in the mail. Because particularly if it is a busy time for the IRS. This is precious time that should not be wasted because the Stamped Schedule 1 is required in order to register the vehicle with the state DMV.
If you choose to actually deliver the form to the IRS office, you will be forced to wait in line for a representative to review the form and then stamp the Schedule 1. With this option, you are at the mercy of the IRS. The nearest office could be many miles away, and once you are there is no way to know how long it could take. People have reported that on a busy day at the IRS office, you may have to wait in line for as long as 6 hours.
For these reasons it is easiest to use an online e-filing tool such as Express Truck Tax for your 2290 filing needs. Since it is authorized by the IRS for e-filing, that shows it is a trustworthy and reliable service. Another benefit to using this particular service is that they have a team of Truck Tax experts that can take calls, emails, and online chats regarding any Truck Tax question you may have. HVUT Form 2290 tips for Owner-Operators

The job of a Heavy Vehicle Owner Operator can be one of the most stressful and yet it is also one of the most vital for our nation’s economy. An owner operator’s job is not only physically strenuous due to the long hours on the road; it can also be mentally draining, confusing, and stressful due to the various regulations that are imposed on owner operators each year for their heavy vehicles. These highway regulations include Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) which includes the IRS Form 2290 as well as IRS Form 8849. Another tax that affects the trucking industry is the International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA).
Filing IFTA can also be a very long and confusing process due to the amount of records that need to be collected and maintained. The reason for keeping these records is so that the Fuel Tax (IFTA) is accurately distributed to all of the states and provinces that were involved. For Example, if a driver drove through a state on its public highways, but did not purchase any fuel in that state, then that state did not receive any taxes from that driver. The Fuel Tax would redistribute the taxes so that certain states would not be neglected if they were used. Each driver must keep detailed trip notes for the number of miles that were traveled, and also how much fuel was purchased in each state or province.
The IRS Form 2290 has its own set of detailed instructions, sections. The first part, the Schedule 1, must be completed and stamped by the IRS in order for the vehicle to be registered with the Department of Motor vehicles. The traditional way to obtain this stamp from the IRS can be filed one of two ways. The form can be sent to the IRS office via postal mail and then wait for the stamped form to be sent in the mail, which can take several weeks. The other option is to file at the nearest IRS office and get it stamped in person. This is also a very time consuming option that often includes waiting in line for a long period of time.
Fortunately, these confusing processes have been made easier, simpler, and safer. ExpressTruckTax.com serves as a one-stop-shop for all truck tax needs! Express Truck Tax allows drivers to E-File a completed Form 2290 online with the IRS and receives a stamped Schedule 1 in minutes. (The stamp is actually a watermark, not a physical stamp. State DMV’s will accept this as proof) The IFTA process is also much easier thanks to the online tools that Express Truck Tax has to offer. With features like online trip sheets and abnormal MPG audits, Express Truck Tax has what it takes to get you back on the road with as little paperwork as possible.

E-file IRS HVUT Form 2290 in November 2011-2012

The Tax Year for 2011 – 2012 has been different due to the delay in the filing process. This year the Form 2290 is due during the period ranging from November 1 – 30, 2011 for the 2011-2012 tax periods. In order to File the IRS Form 2290 for Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes (HVUT), Express Truck Tax has made the process Quick, Simple, and Easy-to-use. When you use Express Truck Tax to E-File a Form 2290, the process takes just a few minutes. Choosing to E-file this return is much simpler than paper filing. Instead of using a confusing form full of tax jargon, Express Truck Tax has simplified the form to plain English. It is just a series of questions, mostly pertaining to basic business information. The process is broken down into several short and to-the-point sections.
The first step to Filing the Form 2290 Online is to go to ExpressTruckTax.com an IRS Authorized E-File Provider for Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes. From this page, you can get started on a Form 2290, IFTA filing, or sign up as a service provider. To login, just click on the Sign-Up button. From here, just enter some basic information to set up you Express Truck Tax account. (Please note: it is totally free to create an account. You only pay per return)
After signing up, you will be taken to the Dashboard of your account. This page displays your basic business information as well as the status of your most recent returns. From here, you can add new businesses to file for, as well as create new returns. To File a new 2290, just click on Create New Return at the bottom of the page.
The first thing that will be asked is the First Use Month of the vehicle as well as the year that you are filing for. If the vehicle has been on the road since last year, then select July 2011 as the first use month because that is the first month of the tax period.
On the next section, you can add heavy vehicles. There are several categories to add them to. They can be Taxable Vehicles, Suspended Vehicles, Prior Year Suspended Vehicles, Sold/Destroyed/Stolen Vehicles, or Low Mileage Credit Vehicles. Taxable Vehicles are normal heavy vehicles that travel a minimum of 5,000 miles per year. Suspended Vehicles fall below the 5,000 mile threshold (7,500 if agricultural) and no taxes are due for these, but they must still be filed for. Prior Year Suspended Vehicles are vehicle that were filed for previously, but they either exceeded the mileage threshold or the vehicle was sold. Sold/Destroyed/Stolen Vehicles are just as they sound – sold, destroyed, or stolen before June 1. Low Mileage Credit Vehicles are recorded if taxes were paid for a vehicle in the previous year, but the vehicle never exceeded the mileage threshold.
After selecting the type of payment for the taxes due, the system performs an internal audit of the information that was submitted. This audit checks for any basic errors that may have been made.
You can then select how you would like to pay the IRS. The IRS accepts Electronic Funds Withdrawal, EFTPS, and check or money order. An electronic funds withdrawal would instantly withdraw the payment from a bank account within 5 business days. EFTPS stands for the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System. It is a government program, but in order to use it you must already have an EFTPS account (this can take at least 2 weeks to create). A check or money order can also be used to pay the taxes due. In order to use this method, you will need to print a payment voucher from the Express Truck Tax website then mail that to your local IRS office.
Before you finish, ExpressTruckTax.com offers many additional services such as a fax or an automated text message to your cell phone as soon as the Schedule 1 is available. You can also have the form faxed to anyone including your leasing company, trucking association, or yourself.
www.ExpressTruckTax.com allows you to fill out your IRS Form 2290 online and send it to the IRS electronically! This way you can get a stamped schedule 1 in about 10 minutes. Express Truck Tax is authorized by the IRS to file Form 2290. The taxpayer will then receive the schedule 1 via email or fax as soon as the IRS processes the form. The form will then be watermarked by the IRS instead of an actual physical stamp.
