Today is the August 31st, 2023 Form 2290 Deadline, File Today

Today is August 31st, 2023, the last day to File Form 2290 and pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax to the IRS. Are you a driver of a vehicle weighing 55,000 pounds or more? Then you need to be aware of this important deadline!

Form 2290 is an IRS tax form that must be filed annually for the upcoming tax year. By filing now you are paying your tax in advance and do not have to worry about paying it again until next year. The Form 2290 tax year goes from July 1st to June 30th of the following year. This is important to know because a vehicle’s Stamped Schedule 1 expires on June 30th.

A Stamped Schedule 1 is important because it is used to get a vehicle’s tags and registration and can only be obtained by filing Form 2290. If a vehicle is found without a current Stamp Schedule 1, this can lead to being pulled over and penalized. If you do not pay the tax or file Form 2290 at all before August 31st, fines will occur.

If Form 2290 is filed late or the tax is not paid, you will be charged late fines, and the fine for not filing Form 2290 is actually greater than the fine for not paying the tax.

For every month the deadline is missed there will be a fine of 4.5% of the total tax due for up to five months. If there is underpayment for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, there will be a penalty of 0.5% of the tax due. Additional interest charges of 0.54% accrue each month that Form 2290 is not filed. This is why it is important to not only file Form 2290 but pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax as well.

This is why it is important for you not to miss this deadline. Lucky for you ExpressTruckTax has your back. ExpressTruckTax is the market-leading Form 2290, e-file provider that provides simple Form 2290 filing that can be completed in minutes! Simply enter your business information including your Employer Identification Number (EIN), vehicle information including your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and your payment information.

Now you don’t have to worry about going to an external site to pay your HVUT. What are you waiting for? File Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax so that you don’t miss today’s big deadline!

The Form 2290 Deadline is Only a Few Days Away, File Now!

Truckers, you only have a few days left to file Form 2290 for the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) to the IRS without being penalized! Because of this, there are only a few days left to file before you are fined or penalized for not having a current Stamped Schedule 1, which you receive upon filing Form 2290

If you are a driver of a vehicle weighing 55,000 pounds or more, you need to be aware of this August 31st deadline. This is because if you are late you will not be able to get the tags or registration for your vehicle without a current copy of the Stamped Schedule 1. The Stamped Schedule 1 also acts as proof of filing Form 2290. If you are found without a current Stamped Schedule 1, that is when penalties and fines will occur. You can also get a ticket for not being able to provide a current Stamped Schedule 1 on top of getting fined. One way to avoid this is by Filing Form 2290 before the August 31st deadline.

In order to make sure you file on time and don’t miss the deadline, ExpressTruckTax the market-leading Form 2290 e-filer, has the solution you need to file Form 2290. By filing with ExpressTruckTax, you don’t have to worry about missing the deadline and getting fined by the IRS for being late with the tax payment. ExpressTruckTax guarantees you will receive your Stamped Schedule 1 within minutes of filing.

You simply create an account with ExpressTruckTax and enter your business information, your Employer Identification Number (EIN), your vehicle information including the vehicle’s Vehicle Information Number (VIN), if you are claiming any credit vehicles, and then your payment information.

ExpressTruckTax offers a new payment feature that makes ExpressTruckTax even more convenient for filers because Form 2290 can be filed and the tax can be paid at the same time via credit or debit card. Before this option was available, you would have to go through an external payment processing site to pay your taxes. Not only would you have to re-enter all of your information again, but you would also risk forgetting to pay the HVUT, resulting in late fines. Now paying and filing are available in one convenient place! Now you don’t have to worry about being late with your tax payments and get it all done at the same time.

Are you tired of being late with your tax payments and racking up fines? You don’t have to worry about that anymore with ExpressTruckTax! What are you waiting for? File Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax today and stop worrying about being late to pay your HVUT taxes!

What’s the Deal with Form 2290 Deadlines and Month of First Use?

Your IRS Form 2290 deadline can be a bit difficult to figure out. There’s a lot of legalese surrounding when your deadline might fall.

This is a problem because late filings and late HVUT payments almost always result in penalties and interest from the IRS.

Let’s cut through the confusion and phrasing so you can figure out exactly when you need to file your Form 2290.

The Form 2290 Tax Period

Let’s start with the first factor to consider when trying to figure out your Form 2290 deadline – the HVUT tax season. Unlike the primary IRS individual and business income tax year that we are all familiar with, the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax season runs from July 1 – June 30 each year. Why? We don’t know. Who knows why the IRS is the way it is?

What we do know is that if you are using the same truck as the last HVUT tax year, your Form 2290 deadline will be one month after the end of the current tax year – August 31. Since the tax season ends on July 1, the IRS generously gives you almost two months to file your new Form 2290 before the due date.

But what if you start using a different truck during the tax year?

Form 2290 First Use Month

If you start using a different truck during the tax year, you cannot wait until the typical August 31 deadline to file. You will need to file Form 2290 by the end of the month following the month of first use. So, for instance, if you started using a vehicle in February 2021, you will need to file your Form 2290 by March 31, 2021 (today).

Then for the next tax year, if you are still using that truck, your Form 2290 deadline will be August 31 along with everyone else.

What do you need to file Form 2290?

In order to file your Form 2290 by your deadline, you will need the following information:

  • 1. Business Details: Name, EIN, and Address
  • 2.Vehicle Details: VIN. and gross weight of the vehicle.
  • 3. Type of Return: If you are filing a 2290 VIN Correction or amended return, be sure to choose the type of amendment.
  • 4. Suspended Vehicle Details: If your vehicle is tax suspended choose the mileage category and enter the VIN.
  • 5. Paid Preparer Details: If you are Tax Professional filing for your clients, Enter your Firm name, address, EIN, name, and PTIN.

File your Form 2290 today!

If you started using a truck in February or earlier, you need to file your Form 2290 by midnight tonight!

We provide easy-to-follow prompts and we guarantee you’ll get your stamped Schedule 1 back from the IRS! The whole process only takes a few minutes.

This Is What Actually Happens If You Don’t File IRS 2290

The IRS Form 2290 deadline is creeping up.

Don’t end up blindsided. Filing IRS 2290 for 2020 by the 2290 deadline is critical, not only to stay compliant but also to remain in operation and avoid fines.

Still not convinced? Don’t wait around until the end of August to find out for yourself, we’ll tell you what will happen right now. Here’s a rundown of what exactly what happens when you miss the IRS 2290 deadline:

What Happens If You Forget About IRS 2290?

IRS 2290 Deadline

Normally, the annual IRS 2290 deadline is August 31st.

We’re off to a good start. You’ve got a couple more days to file than normal.   But you’re busy. What if you still can’t find the time or motivation?

IRS 2290 Penalties

Here’s some motivation:

If you miss the IRS 2290 deadline, you’ll face penalties. Let’s say you simply forget to file.

First, you’ll need to pay the IRS 2290 late filing penalty, which is 4.5% of the total HVUT 2290 tax amount you owe.

Then, you’ll face an additional .54% of interest each month that passes without you filing.

On top of that, you’ll still have to pay the original HVUT 2290 amount you owe whenever you do file.

If the reason for late filing was an error on your original IRS 2290 return, you may be able to avoid penalties altogether. You can attach an explanation to your corrected IRS 2290 for 2020 filing, showing reasonable cause for the delay.

Even this, however, does not guarantee that the IRS will accept your statement and save you from the penalty.

Avoiding Form 2290 Penalties

There’s an easy fix for avoiding IRS Form 2290 penalties: File HVUT 2290 before the 2290 due date!

The Form 2290 deadline is usually August 31.

You really have no excuse not to file on time. Especially with ExpressTruckTax as an option.

ExpressTruckTax allows you to file IRS 2290 for 2020 online quickly and easily.

Plus, you’ll get your Schedule 1 just minutes after you’ve submitted your return. It doesn’t take long, and you can file from anywhere. Knock it out today and forget about the IRS 2290 due date until next year.

File your IRS 2290 today!

So, What’s the Deal with the IRS 2290 Deadline?

If you’re reading this article, you probably know that you need to file your IRS 2290 soon.

But did you know that the 2290 filing deadline is September 3rd, 2019, not the usual August 31st?

Maybe you’re wondering why the 2290 deadline is different.

Or perhaps you have some confusion surrounding filing IRS Form 2290 and paying your actual IRS 2290 payment.

Better yet, you might be thinking about how much of a hassle this is, and wondering why it’s necessary in the first place.

Well, you’re about to find out! I’m here to answer all of your IRS 2290 questions.

Form 2290 Due Date

Why September 3rd?

Normally, the Form 2290 deadline is August 31st.

This year, that date falls on a Saturday. The next business day would be Monday, September 2nd, but that’s Labor Day.

Therefore, this year, the Form 2290 due date is September 3rd, 2019.

You might be thinking about how lucky you are to get a couple extra days this year but think again.

As tempting as it may be to wait until the last minute, how likely are you to think about filing IRS 2290 and paying your 2290 highway use tax after a weekend and holiday…?

Trust me. File today or, at the very latest, file August 30th. That way you’ll ensure that the 2290 deadline is met.

Plus, if there are any issues or your IRS Form 2290 is rejected and you need to make corrections, you’ll have time to do so before the Form 2290 due date.

I’m not asking much. If you file with an IRS-authorized e-file provider like ExpressTruckTax the whole process takes as little as 10 minutes.

Seriously, just get it over with.

What About the IRS 2290 Payment?

So, you might’ve heard that if you can’t afford to pay your IRS 2290 payment right now, you should go ahead and file IRS Form 2290 anyway.

This is true.

Failing to file IRS Form 2290 by the 2290 filing deadline will result in a penalty of 4.5% of the 2290 highway use tax due. This will increase monthly for up to 5 months.

However, the penalty for failing to pay your IRS 2290 payment is only 0.5% of your total tax amount, plus additional interest of 0.54% per month.

Even if you can’t afford to pay your IRS 2290 payment right now, you should still file.

If you file but do not pay your full 2290 highway use tax amount, you’ll face a much lower penalty (0.5% compared to 4.5% of the total tax due).

Maybe you can pay by September 3rd, but not by tomorrow.

File today anyway.

You don’t want to get stuck with a rejected return or worse, without a 2290 Schedule 1.
You may face unexpected penalties.
You never know what could happen. Take a moment to file now.

When Will I Get My 2290 Schedule 1?

Your 2290 Schedule 1 is a huge part of why it’s so critical for you to file on time.

An updated 2290 Schedule 1 is necessary for operation, including anything from renewing your tags to traveling internationally or renewing your IFTA license.

If you file IRS 2290 online with ExpressTruckTax, you’ll get a copy of your 2290 Schedule 1 just minutes after IRS Form 2290 filing. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

Your HVUT Form 2290 is Due Next Thursday

Heavy Vehicle Use Tax Form 2290

What’s on your mind? The fact that it’s pretty hot and humid at this point during the summer, the fact that Labor Day is almost here to enjoy, or the fact that your Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT) Form 2290 is due by next Thursday, on August 31st?

If your mind isn’t on the deadline, then it should be, for at least 5 minutes, because that’s all it takes to quickly and conveniently file your Form 2290 with ExpressTruckTax in order to receive a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 via email within about 15 minutes, depending on IRS volume. Also, so you can become a HVUT expert we have put together a list of HVUT facts.

All About The HVUT

So what exactly is the HVUT? It is the tax assessed on the use of public highways by heavy vehicles with gross weights of 55,000 pounds or more. The taxes collected are used to repair, maintain, and build public highways.

You must file HVUT Form 2290 for every taxable highway motor vehicle that is required to be registered in your name under state, District of Columbia, Canadian, or Mexican law at the time of its first use period.

A taxable highway motor vehicle is one with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more and includes any self-propelled vehicle designed to carry loads over public highways, regardless if it’s designed to perform other functions. A taxable vehicle consists of a chassis or a chassis and a body but does not include the load.

E-filing App For Form 2290 HVUT
The current HVUT tax period began on July 1, 2017, and will end on June 30, 2018. The HVUT is based on your first use month and is due by the last day of the month following the first use month. For example, if you first use your truck in October then your Form 2290 will be due by November 30th. Because a majority of truckers first use their trucks in July, the last day of the following month, which is August 31st is a huge deadline day.

As a result of filing your Form 2290, you will get a copy of your stamped Schedule 1 which serves as your proof of payment. It actually has a digital watermark stamp that includes the time that the IRS approved and accepted your Form 2290. Your stamped Schedule 1 is very important because you need it to register new vehicles and to renew your vehicle tags. Without it, you will be operating illegally.

Luckily filing Form 2290 is extremely easy and some of your information can be found on previous stamped Schedule 1s. All you need to file is your business name, address, and EIN (Employer Identification Number). For your vehicles, you need the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) and taxable gross weight.
