What is a VIN?

VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number. Every vehicle has one and each VIN consists of a unique set of 17 numbers and letters that help identify a vehicle. The VIN of a vehicle is entered when filing Form 2290 so that the IRS knows what vehicle(s) you are filing Form 2290 for.

What is a VIN Correction?

If the wrong VIN is entered when filing Form 2290, and the form is submitted with this wrong VIN, a VIN correction must be filed. This correction must be filed so that the correct VIN appears on the Stamped Schedule 1 that you obtain upon filing Form 2290. If the correct VIN does not appear on the Stamped Schedule 1, there is a chance that you may be fined or penalized for this. There is no deadline to file a VIN correction.

When filing your Form 2290, it’s important to have all of your information together and ready to go! In order for your Form 2290 to be accepted by the IRS, all of your information must be correct.

It is especially important that, when you are filing, your VIN is correct. Checking your VIN before you file will reduce the possibility of having an incorrect VIN on your Schedule 1, as well as make the filing process simpler.

What Is A VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique number assigned to your truck and is issued by the United States Department of Transportation. It’s important to note that two different trucks will never have the same code.

To find your vehicle’s  VIN, you can find it stated in the registration, title documents, or on the actual vehicle.

When you file your Form 2290, the IRS requires the VIN of each vehicle so the stamped Schedule 1 contains the code for each vehicle.

How Do I Check My VIN?

ExpressTruckTax offers a free VIN checker to all of their clients. The Form 2290 VIN checker is an exclusive feature that helps to ensure the VIN entered is correct when you are e-filing.

Ensuring that your VIN is validated before filing reduces the need of having to file an amendment to fix the VIN on your stamped Schedule 1. Every vehicle that is used during the tax period needs to have it’s unique VIN number on a stamped Schedule 1, which proves that the Form 2290 was filed.

Why Do you need to check your VIN?

The IRS typically does not reject a Form 2290 that contains the wrong VIN, but if the VIN is incorrect, you will have to file a VIN correction amendment to get the VIN changed on your stamped Schedule 1.

As a result of this, it saves you time and money to ensure that your VIN is correct before you submit your form to the IRS.

It’s also a service provided at no additional cost by ExpressTruckTax, so what do you have to lose?!

How To Correct A VIN Error After The Form 2290 Deadline

The 2020 Form 2290 deadline was August 31! If you entered the wrong VIN on your return, we’ve got you covered!

We know paperwork isn’t the most interesting thing in the world. When you sit down to fill out forms sometimes it’s easy to get distracted and make mistakes. That’s why ExpressTruckTax offers free Form 2290 VIN corrections to our clients.

Here’s what you need to know to correct your VIN after the deadline.

What’s My VIN?

Your VIN is your vehicle identification number. It’s a 17-character-long combination of numbers and letters in a font that is usually small and hard to see.

Therefore, unfortunately, it’s incredibly easy to make typos when entering your VIN on your Form 2290. If you put the incorrect VIN on your 2290 now, there will be hassles and headaches with the DMV later.

ExpressTruckTax wants to save you that trouble. That’s why we work with the IRS as a trusted and secure source to offer free Form 2290 VIN corrections to our clients. And you’ll get your Stamped 2290 Schedule 1 in a matter of minutes.

Why do I need to correct my VIN on Form 2290?

If you accidentally file your Form 2290 with an incorrect VIN, it will cause problems down the line. Since the VIN on the return doesn’t match the VIN on your truck, the DMV and carriers will not accept your stamped Schedule 1.

How do I make a Form 2290 VIN correction?

E-filing a Form 2290 VIN correction is incredibly simple. All you need to do is sign-in to your account and click “Start New Return” then click the “Form 2290 Amendments” option to complete your free VIN correction.

*If you did not file your 2290 with ExpressTruckTax, you can still make a VIN correction, it just will not be free.

Then, simply fill out the Form 2290 VIN correction information and transmit your form to the IRS. You can resubmit your forms as many times as necessary to make VIN corrections for free. The next step is to relax because you’ll receive your updated 2290 Schedule 1 in a matter of minutes!

However, keep in mind that VIN corrections can only be made for taxable and suspended vehicles. They can’t be made for credit vehicles or for prior year suspended vehicles. Also, when filing a free VIN correction you can’t combine it with credits that have been claimed on the same form.

Remember that the original form with the incorrect VIN on it must be paid for by the due date before you submit a correction or the IRS will assess penalties on top of the tax that you actually owe.

2290 Amendment Form: Fix Your Filing

In the year 1919, Washington politicians decided the United States had enough to drink and passed the Eighteenth Amendment—also known as Prohibition. About 13 years later, the US Congress saw the failure of Prohibition, and repealed it in its entirety with the Twenty-First Amendment. Hey, we all make mistakes!

These days, it seems like everybody has something to say about amendments. While we know you have opinions about who can bear arms, let’s stay focused here, Trucking Nation.

Jokes aside, there’s a chance you might make a mistake when you file your heavy vehicle use taxes this year. For this reason alone, you can file a Form 2290 Amendment with ExpressTruckTax. What are these amendments for? They are for increased taxable gross weight, exceeded mileage for suspended vehicles, and vehicle identification number corrections.

    Increased Taxable Gross Weight

If the maximum load your truck customarily carried increased, the taxable gross weight probably changed. When this happens, you need to calculate and report the additional tax for the remainder of the period on Form 2290. When filing, you just choose the Amended Return option, and document the month or date the taxable gross weight increased. This should occur on the last day of the month following the month in which the taxable gross weight increased.

    Suspended Vehicles Mileage Exceeded

When a suspended vehicle exceeds the mileage use limit, you need to file this amendment. The mileage use limit applies to the total mileage a vehicle is on the road during a period, regardless of the number of owners. Mileage use limit for a heavy vehicle on public highways is 5,000 miles or less (7,500 miles or less for agricultural vehicles).

    Vehicle Identification Number Correction

If you filed a 2290 and somehow entered an incorrect VIN, you can file a VIN Correction Amendment to fix it. Now, VIN Corrections can only be filed for taxable or suspended vehicles and not for credit vehicles or for prior year suspended vehicles. When you file a VIN Correction, you must have already paid for the taxes due on the original Form 2290, or the IRS will assign penalties in addition to the actual tax. The good news is, VIN corrections are free if you filed your original 2290 with ExpressTruckTax!

With ExpressTruckTax, we make it easy to file Form 2290 Amendments. Not only do we make it easy, but you will also get your Schedule 1 for the new weight category in minutes!

While you may not need a 2290 Amendment, we’re here to answer any questions about 2290 filing you come across. Reach our dedicated, bilingual customer support team by phone at 704.234.6005, live chat, or by email.

How to Choose a Service Provider for Form 2290?

If you are required to file HVUT, or Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes, then you are familiar with the IRS Form 2290.  If you have been paying these taxes for many years, then you likely to be more familiar with the process for paper filing. However, there have been some huge technology advances in the past few years and the IRS does now accept and encourage taxpayers to E-File their 2290 Form.

There are several online service providers for the IRS Form 2290, and you need to select the one that is right for you!  In making these decisions, there are a few things that you should consider. When you select a provider, make sure that they are an authorized IRS E-File Provider, make sure that they can handle all of your truck tax needs, and it is best to find a provider that is entirely web-based.

As for the Authorized E-File Providers, you should look on their website for a statement that they are indeed authorized by the IRS to E-File. You can also refer to the IRS Website to see a complete list of Authorized E-File Providers.

If you are filing Truck Taxes for more than just the Form 2290, such as IFTA, or Form 8849 then it would be beneficial to have them all filed from the same place. Some service providers are exclusively for Form 2290, or Form 8849, etc. It would be most economical and convenient to get them all filed in the same place.

The benefits of a web-based system are many. If the system is not web based, then there is less reason to use them.  The IRS recommends E-Filing because of it’s speed and security. If you are required to download lots of files and store information on your computer, your system is not completely web based. The benefits of a web-based system are obviously the speed of transfer to the IRS when you are finished, but also the security of storing your information online instead of on your computer.

ExpressTruckTax.com is one such provider. It is entirely web-based, they are a one-stop-shop for truck tax needs, and they are authorized by the IRS as an official E-File provider. If you need any help, you can also contact their wonderful, Customer support team!  They offer live chat & phone support Mon-Fri, as well as email support 24/7.

IRS Form 2290: The Filing Process

Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, or HVUT, can be filed with the IRS by using IRS Form 2290 . This fee is required by the IRS for all vehicles with registered gross weights equal to or exceeding 55,000 pounds.  This Form must be filed annually for heavy vehicles operating on public highways.

This IRS Form contains a Schedule 1 that must be stamped by the IRS before the vehicle can be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles.  The IRS accepts this form by mail, but that can take up to several weeks to process.  This form could also be taken directly to the IRS office, but that option can take several hours of your day.  This must be accompanied by a proof of EFTPS payment.

It is required that this form be filed annually for each taxable vehicle that is used on public highways during the tax year.  The tax year begins on July 1st and ends on June 30th.  A Form 2290 must also be filed when a vehicle is placed in service.  The due date for that is the last day of the following month.  For example: if a vehicle is placed in service on January 5th, the Form 2290 will be due on February 28th.

Even though there are thousands, if not millions, of Heavy Vehicles that are required to file the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax, the IRS still requires everyone to either mail the Form 2290 to the IRS or actually come to the IRS office.  Fortunately there is an easier way that has recently become available.  www.ExpressTruckTax.com allows you to fill out your IRS Form 2290 online and send it to the IRS electronically!

Express Truck Tax is authorized by the IRS to E-File Form 2290.  This way you can get a stamped schedule 1 in about 10 minutes.  The file is electronically submitted to the IRS, and within minutes the file is processed by the IRS and sent back to the person filing.  The form will then contain a watermark from the IRS as proof that it has been processed.

Tax Credit Vehicles (IRS Form 2290)

You may be surprised to know that you can file an IRS Form 2290 to claim a credit for certain Heavy Vehicles in some scenarios.  You can also E-File an IRS Form 2290 for these credit vehicles through www.expresstrucktax.com

Heavy vehicles that were stolen, destroyed, or sold before June 1st and not used during the rest of the year qualify as a vehicle to claim a credit for.  If a heavy vehicle was used for 5,000 miles or less, or an agricultural vehicle that was used for 7,500 miles or less, it too qualifies as a credit vehicle.  It is important to also note that a credit, lower tax rate, exemption, or refund is not allowed for an occasional light or decreased load; nor is it allowed for a discontinued or changed use of the vehicle.

Although the rules that apply to credit vehicles may be complicated and confusing, ExpressTruckTax.com helps make it simple.  The filing process only takes a few minutes.  If you need any help, their dedicated customer support team can help walk you through the process.
